How much last gen stuff is too much?

Post by Darran@Retro Gamer » Fri Aug 23, 2013 6:13 pm

As you know we run future classic, which covers last gen stuff and occassionally this gen stuff.
But last gen is soon to become retro and this gen wil be last gen, so what's a retro mag to do?

How much of last gen retro (ie ps2, xbox, gamecube) would you be happy to see per month.
We havent added a 0 pages as we have been running content of this type for the last 2 years :)

The PS2/XBox/Gamecube generation seems so far away now. I think there's loads of room for coverage of those systems, especially as there were quite a few games with ties to games from previous generations. I'd be fine with 8 pages' worth, whether one large feature on a game or a few smaller articles.

I'd be happy with 10 pages +.

As much as some of the dinosaurs may moan, the likes of PS2,XBOX & Gamecube will bring in more readers than articles on the 3DO & Jag etc.

I couldn't disagree more. I buy the mag at full price from WH Smiths assuming this makes you the most because its retro. Retro doesn't mean last season in any sphere. I can't see why 0 pages wasn't an option personally.

True: these guys you speak of are dinosaurs. Just imagine it: they want to talk about twenty year old gaming machines in a magazine called Retro Gamer!

I voted for 4.

I'm happy to see them included - but not to start taking over.

hmm.. yes its a tough one. I do actually like the balance RG has currently, I wouldn't change it all that much.. for me as long as there's a grab-bag of everything, nice variety across the board.. balance.. that's what counts to me and I think RG has it just about right.

Probably slowly slap in a page about the 'newer' stuff gradually, still keeping focus on the oldest/older stuff. But the precise number of pages... to be honest I don't know, just a nice balance does me just fine.

Having an occasional "Making of..." along with Future Classic would be more than acceptable.
Remember the mag's 10-year rule - a 2003 cut-off comfortably encompasses a sizeable chunk of the PS2/GC/Xbox library.

Yeah, a lot of that generation is already fully retro. As such keeping it down to a couple of pages for the last ten years shouldn't be too much of a bind.

At the present time, 4 pages is the right balance for me.

I'll say 4, so long as it's 10-12 year old stuff.
To be honest though, there seems to be hardly that coverage of Playstation and N64 stuff - what's wrong with raising that generation's profile a bit?

4 sounds about right, although just as the mag has a mix every issue it would be a bit much to have 4 pages of last-gen stuff every issue.

I'd be very happy to see 4 - 6 pages of coverage.

Excellent - Rage Racer is one of the Playstation's greats and the art and design of the Oddworld games is amazing.
I was pleasantly surprised by the piece on Myst - another series where the design work is just incredible.
