This is actually such a hard HARD HARD choice.

IK+ is still playable today, Tekken 1-3 were a lot of fun, Way of the Exploding Fist on the Spectrum was incredible, the Mortal Kombat games probably consumed more of my time than any other, and the Dead or Alive games blew me away with their physics and counter-fighting moves... yet there so many more besides.

But in the end... I would plump for Soul Calibur on the Dreamcast or Soul Calibur 2 on the GameCube.

If it's not the awesome gameplay, plus with Weapons Master modes to really squeeze the playability out, there's the awesome music. It's so good I have it on in the car.

Not a fan of the genre, but Tekken 3 is one of my 10/10 games. Played a lot of IK+ on Amiga - that's probably my (distant) 2nd place.

The spinning neck chop is still the single best move in any fighting game.
Got a great idea for the next fighting cross over game.... Barbarian vs Soul Calibiur

Virtua Fighter 5 -

Virtua Fighter has always been rooted in its simple 1v1 fighting gameplay, but the game also has a very technical side for those who wish to master a fighting game. A game with a great mixture of fighting mechanics.

Tekken 3 is a beautiful game that in my opinion has never been beaten. It can't harm that it is pretty easy and I am crap at fighting games though.

Must be "Street Fighter II: The World Warrior". Bought it in 1992 as PAL Version and played it with my best friends a million times.
Years later I got hands on a japanese Version with Ntsc/60 Hz - it was like a different game :D

I'd probably have to go for Soul Calibur 2, it was the first fighting game I got properly into and used to play it all the time and do all the story thing it had going on.

That's a really tough question. :? I think overall it has to be Guilty Gear. Close runners-up are Arcana heart 3 and Matrimelee!

Way Of The Exploding Fist. That music is burnt into my brain. I'm not much good at fighters, and it was downhill from there on.

Barbarian on the Atari ST...

Really easy to master the moves, but took skill to beat someone if they knew what they were doing! And of course, lopping off peoples heads is always good for a laugh!

Plenty of great games have been mentioned already, IK+, SF2 and the like but I have to go with Bloody Roar 2.
With a system simple enough to make it accessible to casual players but detailed enough to allow a large degree of strategy it feel into that beautiful zone that games such as Tekken always missed, where the game is just a joy to play on all levels.
A great selection of characters offering a wide variety of game styles and stengths/weaknesses and I always loved how, even if your foe was in beast form and you were not you still had a serious chance to win.
For me, and my wife, it offered many hours of madness and fun and more than one sulky afternoon after Alice bunny kicked me to death.
