I'm no huge fan of Mario 2, but I'd take anything over that stale, lifeless pile of 2.5D crap.

New Super Mario Bros 2 for me. I've already put more time into it than the old Super Mario Bros 2 (we are talking about the USA version not Lost Levels right?). The levels fun to race through and the Coin Rush mode is starting to get incredibly additive...

Yeah, I was gonna ask the same question... the Doki Doki Panic conversion as opposed to Lost Levels here?

Old Super Mario Bros 2 - Nostalgia prevails. Despite not being a mario game originally, Nintendo did the best job making it their own. While I appreciate their efforts to reinvent the franchise with the coin rush aspect of NSMB2, nothing beats the original platformers. Nothing

Yes, the USA version.

I'll definitely go for the new one. It's perhaps a bit safe compared to the recent 3D Mario games, but it's a solid effort and Mario 2 has always been rightly regarded as a bit of a weak link in the series.

Had it been one or three though, I'd be spinning the other way.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 for me. Its a hugely enjoyable game with some great level designs. The coin rush mode is genuinely original, and is sadly getting overlooked by the fact that on initial inspection, not much has changed from the first DS game in the series.

I am actually quite the fan of the original Mario 2 though as well. Its certainly different. The vegetable chucking was great fun, the graphics very nice and the choice of four playable characters was very welcome.

Super Mario USA is actually my favourite 8bit Mario. I'm am one of the rare that thinks Mario 3 is a bit dull.

Well if he's an oddity then so am I! I have tried to like it over and over and..... its good but I never felt it was up there with Mario Bros. 1 or World. Or 64 or Galaxy 2. In fact, I would go as far as to say I think its possibly the weakest in the series.

I need to play it again I think. I really should love it.

SMB 2 innovated. NSMB 2 is just more of the same.

I agree, the dream setting, ability to create different subspaces in the dream world, having multiple characters working together, and a weird fascination with turnips*, SMB2 is the Inception of the Mario series.

*turnip = totem

Super Mario World just feels like genius to me. Super Mario 3 just doesn't though. I can appreciate how clever it can be but it just doesn't get me. I played it back in the day too, completed on the NES so it has nothing to do with playing it late. Been playing it on Super Mario Collection on the SFC and I still find it a bit soulless.
