That's a great vid. Not least because I never knew there was a Robotron on the beeb and judging by the vid it looks worthy of further investigation.

Having said that, it's nice to see my memories of a really poor Scramble clone confirmed. Penetrator on the speccy didn't have the glamour visuals of the arcade but it provided a much better playing experience than the beeb version. My mate had a very cool Vic-20 Scramble but in all honesty I only saw it for a few minutes because he was intent on boring me to tears with his latest killer app, Shadowfax.

The Codies did a few good ones, Super Stuntman a Spy Hunter clone and Mig 29 Simulator an Afterburner type. Can't go wrong for £2.99!

Planetoid on the Beeb for looking and sounding amazing and being unbelievably faithful to it's arcade parent despite being illegitimate.

Another shout for Galaxians on the C16 here. I only had 2 games for ages when I had my C16, one was a bmx game, the other was this. It made everything my best mate had on his 2600 look pants.

Got to be Deluxe Galaga on the Amiga.
A clone of Galaga (strangely enough).
Not only my fav Arcade clone but my fav game of all time.
Still play it. Every day.

Mr. Wimpy on the Spectrum, for the sheer audacity of it.

Edit: It's a clone of Burger Time, except for the first level which is ripped off from Frogger.

Star Battle on the VIC-20 was an awesome clone of Galaxian! Oh, hang on... it was an official conversion? Bugger! Can't decide now!

Codemasters' "Ninja Massacre" on the C64 for me. Just like Gauntlet but with a ninja instead, and for the 11 year old me that was perfect.

Kong on the Vic-20 by Anirog - it was as ugly as sin, but boy did I love it! Multi-colours against a white background, but at the time it felt like I was playing the arcade game.

Anirog also did a fantastic verison of scramble called.... wait for it... skramble on the C64, which I also played to death. Ok, it was pretty easy, but I kept going back to it again and again.

In fact, I actually go Skramble for Christmas. I found it in my parents cupboard and loaded it when they went out, so I could have a snicky play. Actually, i feel quite quilty about that now . . sorry Mum.

And, of course, Jelly Monsters on the Vic-20 - probably the best pacman clone ever. No wonder Atari got so upset.

Gauntlet on the Amstrad, which was an awesome Defender clone. For a long time I thought Gauntlet was the real name and Defender was just a copy. Ooops!

Will there be a "and this is like the arcade only better" section of your feature? Hm, that would need to take a look at official conversions too...

I used to hammer Phoenix on the 2600. Was that a clone? I can't remember as I was so young at the time.

No, that was actually a licensed conversion.

Isn't Repton a clone of Boulder Dash? Only better?

I never played Boulder Dash, but played all the Repton games for the Electron back in the day.
