feature Idea - Valhalla and Great Space Race

Post by slacey1070 » Mon Aug 02, 2010 8:11 am

I'd enjoy reading about those (assuming I hadn't missed them...)

I can't for the life of me remember the name of the software house now though...

Legend Software were the guys responsible. Those were both really interesting, innovative games for their time and I agree they would both make a great feature, particularly Valhalla.

Have you played The Great Space Race? The only thing it was good at was hype. My cousin bought it, oh how we laughed when we broke into its basic listing.

I do wonder if they were going for a Howard Scott Warshaw effect, from best to worst so they cover the whole range of gaming.

Still, if you got bored you could always let it play itself.... :D
I suppose they were going for the Hitchikers angle but it backfired somewhat, I agree it wasn't a patch on Valhalla. Would still be interested in an article though, if not for anything else but uncovering why it supposedly cost £250,000 to make... (which I why I guess Legend charged £15 for it, ouch).

Yeah, I'd love to see a feature on Legend; they really had some highs and lows. Valhalla was quite brilliant for its time, but TGSR was awful by any standard.

I've don't particularly hold the fact that TGSR was written in BASIC against it, as Valhalla largely was too. Rather, it was more a case that the game was poorly designed with hardly any degree of meaningful interaction for the player; you could leave it to just play itself and it'd seemingly do as well as if you took part. Valhalla made you think; TGSR made you push buttons and wait.

Somewhere in the middle was their third game, Komplex, which was competently programmed but utterly tedious to play; you had to search through a huge random maze whilst under constant attack. If Legend could be tracked down, it'd be nice to finally know what happened to the much-hyped sequel, Komplex City, which was never released.

Now Komplex, that's a game I'd forgotten all about.

Reading the Crash review, it would seem it beat Halo to the FPS regenerating shields by 20 years!
