It's probably really annoying when people pick a game that isn't on the list, but I simply have to mention Lords of Chaos. It's Chaos but with an exploration/adventuring element - what's not to love? Come on, add it to the poll. It's got Harpies an everything!

Ok, I'll just vote for Chaos.

Rebelstar... I loved that game.
Played it and played it, sometimes simply to explore the ship. Great stuff.

It's strange this, because to me Chaos, Laser Squad, and UFO: Enemy Unknown are very famous, and very well liked. Laser Squad Nemesis I think I've heard of, but the Rebelstar games I haven't a clue about. I'll have to have a look at them, but I'm surprised I don't know them at all.

Has to be UFO for me - naming your soldiers made me feel every shot they took, poor guys :(

I even bought it on the CD32 - now that's devotion!

Shame on you ! ;)

The first is a classic, you have to get to the centre and blow up the main computer...

The second is very good, you have to defeat the queen alien and get in the spaceship, obviously based on Aliens...

Both are great games, basic graphics but the strategy is superb, i think these games converted many arcade style fans to strategy games.

In the first game you use the hulking silver droids to blow a hole in the main door and then after that leg it in. Or you could try other strategies of having a few men at one side and the rest going through another door to create a diversion.

But best of all back in the day these games were £1.99 ! Stunning. Could have easily been a huge hit at £7.95.

I've just had a look, and checked the Wiki page, and I see why I haven't heard of them. They were Spectrum games, though the first was also on the CPC.

I might have a go at the first one on the CPC, then the second on the Spectrum.

"Aliens" was the magic word, so I'll be sure to have a few goes on the sequel! I noticed Hicks mentioned on a screenshot, and an Alien and Marine in it. That sound right up my alley. It's a shame it wasn't released on more computers. Bringing it out only on the Spectrum in '88 seems a waste. I'd had my Amiga about a year by then, so I'd have thought a 16 Bit version would have been a good idea.

All of them!

Still, if it's got to be just one, I'll have to go for UFO for adding a superb strategic element alongside the tactical combat of the other games.

Chaos deserves an honorable mention for being the most social of all Spectrum games though; it was definitely the game to go for when you had more than one friend round.

I loved UFO but for me Chaos is the absolute classic. I had to discover this over a decade after it was written due to the lack of a C64 port. So simple yet so compulsive.

I used to play Chaos and Rebelstar for hours, many years ago. Absolutely brilliant games! :) I had to narrowly vote for Rebelstar, due to its large environment and that it always felt like tactics were more involved. However, Chaos was always superb when you got a few family members banded together and had a face off, firing all those spells at each other! :D Gooey Blob, anyone?? :P

good trick with gooey blob: cast an illusory golden dragon (or other powerful beast) let it get "eaten" by the blob then free it. Boom, one pucker dragon!

Magic Fire: now that was a bastard!

I can't remember the names of them... but do you remember some of the really obscure spells that could pop up, but very very rarely, if you were really lucky when getting new ones from a tree? lol! I'll have to look those up... there were some real nasty ones. ;) Chaos was pure class, I must admit! Somebody needs to make a PC equivalent! All-singing, all dancing, but essentially the same gameplay, no more complicated. :) That would be cool!

if you look at it's entry on World of Spectrum, you'll find loads of remakes of Chaos and an unofficial sequel set in space.

lol! I was actually straight over there to have a look, after mentioning it. ;)

One thing that got me back into Rebelstar a couple of years ago, was doing updated graphics for the SAM Coupe conversion. The game kind of got stuck on hold, but I pretty much completed all the in-game graphics! I was quite pleased with the result! :D
