Although i can respect the huge leap that Mario 64 took when it came out, it is definitly Super Mario Galaxy 2 that wins this contest. This game is without doubt the best 3d platform adventure of all time. I loved the first Mario Galaxy and i honestly thought that the next game could not match it. I am glad to be wrong! This game really pushes the wii in the graphical stakes and game playability. Mario Galaxy 2 is just one big playground to explore and interact with. I know quite a few people are put off because of the so called 'kiddie' graphics and the lack of realism. Galaxy 2 may not be set in a real world location or have you killing soldiers etc but it does take you to a dream like place where you can forget about life and the daily grind. I have always played games for fun and escapism. Super Mario Galaxy 2 does this for me and then some :D

Super Mario 64 was genious, and a game I can still go back and play today with ease. I'm a big lover of Mario games and the N64 outing was it's finest hour. I have access to a Wii, don't play it much though, might set it up for the virtual console maybe....

For me it's all about the time as opposed to the game. SMG2 is great but is nowhere near as groundbreaking as Mario 64 was for it's time. It's certainly the reason I have stronger feelings towards it.

Though I absolutely love both Galaxies, I will never forget the first time Mario came jumping out of that well. And the atmosphere in the water level with that great ambient music was an experience more than a mere game level. When you encountered Yoshi on the roof of the castle you thought "If only He was playable..." (a promise that took 13 years to Be fulfilled...)

Yeah, so did Space Invaders, but compare it now to, I dunno, Ikaruga? Mushi? EspGaluda 2? I know which I'd rather play. Old doesn't necessarily equal better, even if at the time it 'redefined' gaming.

Mario Galaxy 2 is about 600 times more fun than 64.

Oh, and Super Mario World > all 3D Mario.
Totally spot on. Mario 64 while immense at the time and a true classic, doesn't mean Galaxy 2 isn't or can't be better.

I also hope people aren't voting without playing both games. :?

Whilst Mario 64 did (and is) great, SMG2 has made me love Nintendo again and remember how funtabulous gaming can be - and even it is an evolution, rather than revolution - but it has evolved into something utterly wonderful. Thus - SMG2.

Surely this is pretty much bound to be a Mario64 win. 1. this is a retro forum, and Mario 64 is a cherished retro title, and 2. I suspect that voters may not have actually experienced SMG64 and will thus vote for M64.

Super Mario 64 because it lived up to and exceeded all the hype and expectation.

Super Mario 64 fo' sho! It was such a huge step from the 8 bit incarnations and was executed with utter perfection and precision. Thats also one of the reasons it is still heralded as one of the greatest games of all time.

To be honest, i've never really got on with Super Mario 64. As groundbreaking as it was....i didn't really enjoy it, to any great extent.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 is the polar opposite. it's just fabulous fun to play....and that's the key word. Fun.

I havent played Mario 64 in over 10 Years. From my memory i was completely amazed by it, i'm almost too scared to play it now incase i get let down by Mr.Nostalgia. The 64 has not aged gracefully.

As good and revolutionary as Super Mario 64 was / is, Super Mario Galaxy 2 makes it look dull and boring in comparison, each star in SMG2 is never the same and brimming with ingenious play mechanics, if you do happen to dislike a star you only suffer a short period of time then you're off doing something different on the next one.

I've tried replaying Mario 64 recently and found it to be a snorefest, collecting 100 coins in some of the levels for a star is horrendous. SMG2 blows it out of the water for me.

I think Super Mario 64 is more iconic than SMG2, think about how many N64's were sold due to SM64 alone!

If SM64 was re-made with SMG2 graphics and directed camera view, I may change to SM64.
But SMG2 for the win till then.
For a videogame that was released 11 years ago now, Perfect Dark for the N64 completely trounces all its FPS competitors
of the last decade or so, in terms of variety of multiplayer option at your disposal.
