Pac-man -- jaw-stretching wider until he blinks out of existence, accompanied by a classic wilt-and-pop sound effect.

When one of your little guys gets spiked in Cannon Fodder and hes there going 'eurrgh, aghh, aghh, eurghh, aghh, aghhh' until he either dies or you pop him one with the gun to put him out of his misery.

The first stage in beach head 2, when your little soldiers get mowed down by the machine gun, accompanied by some snazzy speech......

Not quite a death, but when you get hit in Sonic and all the rings fly out. That was revolutionary, giving you a couple of seconds to scramble around picking up what you could. It was a lot more forgiving than something like GnG that was a strict 2 hits and your dead.

Also love Star Wars Lego when your character breaks up into little bricks.

Don't know if it would count but losing a game at speedball 2, the artwork on that page was so lush, but you hated ever seeing it because you just knew you could've won that game and the picture was exactly how you felt.

Id have to go for Big Mac the Mad Maintenance Man on cbm 64.

Death by electricity, a lightning crack, a sizzle, a boom and a little body explodesin many direction. great stuff.

Getting hit by a gun in Another World... something about emotionless death of becoming instant skeleton just as you went to open fire, before exploding into ashes seems disturbingly funny.

Has to be the Immortal on the megadrive. The bit where you step in the wrong place and that giant worm thing comes up and eats you. I almost pooped my pants when I first saw that.

The many different and hilariously funny deaths in SPACE QUEST III. From DECELERATION TRAUMA (falling off an edge) to HOLE IN ONE (after some robot gave your head a new "ventilation system") and DECOMPRESSION BLUES. Gives a new meaning to "Die Laughing".

I used that as part of my tactics, with the guys dropping bricks if I knew I wasn't going to hit them in time I shot my own guy , he stops walking and the brick drops harmlessly in front of them!!
