Yep, Commando on the Spectrum. An awesome conversion; actually an improvement (at least as playability goes) over the arcade original.

Much as I love Space Harrier, and think the Spectrum conversion was an amazing job to fit into a 48K single load, the quality of the conversion across the different platforms was highly variable.

Criminal that Commando isnt on the list !

Love a lot of the Elite arcade conversions, my favourite has to be Bombjack on the Speccy. Brilliant playable game and the best one on the 8 bits by farrrrrrrrr

Sorry guys, but my vote goest to Bomb Jack on the C64.

I've been playing this version since the age of like 4 or 5 (I was born in '86) and loved it to bits. In fact, for many years I thought it was a C64 exclusive... until I learnt MANY years later (i.e. about 7 years ago) that it was an arcade game that was ported over to several formats!

Not saying that the Speccy and Arcade versions were bad though. They're very good, as is the Game Boy version (not tried the Amstrad one yet). It's just that I'm used to the C64 version's chunky sprites and Jean Michel Jarre soundtrack :)

Would have gone for Ghosts 'n' Goblins for the C64, but bugger me it's hard!!!

Bomb Jack. The Spectrum game was IMHO better than the coin-op. They got the inertia of the main character bang on, a truly great job.

Ikari Warriors - The CPC conversion was stunning with colourful detailed graphics, fun gameplay, and tight controls. The real icing on the cake though was the fact you could take your mate along too.

Ghosts & Goblins for me.

I've never seen what the appeal of Bomb Jack was. It was bobbins in the arcade, it was bigger bobbins on home systems.

It's strange. Back then at my local arcade, I remember I was one of the few who appreciated Bomb Jack. Almost everyone else didn't like it. Lucky for me, so that I had not to queue to play it! Anyway I loved the arcade so much, that I have never been satisfied by the home conversions.
I felt the same when Terra Cresta was finally converted on the C64, but I was so addicted to that shooter, that I closed one eye and kept playing it anyway.

My vote is based entirely on the C64 versions.. Buggy Boy is probably the best game but it appears it is not anything like the arcade version (which I've never played) from what I'm reading, so I've gone for Ghosts N Goblins, which is an impressive conversion and also has some fab original music! :D

On the C64, you cant jump to the right for example if youre next to a block ? Most games you would jump up and over but from memory i always thought the C64 version of Ghost n Goblins was unplayable. If youre next to a boulder you cant do a 'jump right', you have to go to your left and then jump.

Just found it unplayable and a blocky mess

I'm with witchfinder here and I've voted for Ghosts n Goblins. GnG looked stunning and played great imo. I'm sure Zzap heaped 98% and lavished much praise on it.

I remember the "can't jump right" point that you mention psj3809 but I guess I just got used to that and played around it.

As much as I love bomb jack and GnG, I voted for paperboy. I have great nostalgia of my 'games are for geeks' older sister getting so addicted to it, that she cried when I reset the speccy once half way through a game.

Plus I used to love knocking the drunk tramp over on wednesdays.

Ghost n Goblins ? Did you ever get off the first or second level ? On paper its a great game but was hard as nails, on the Speccy i managed to get to the second level but never the third, way too difficult.

Bomb Jack was just a great simple playable game
