You need to play FPS's on a PC then! Joypads just feel so wrong! They are pretty good for racing games though!

(Apart from so being not retro? No, no need to teach me right now.)
TimeSplitters. Any version. Though the first might be a bit weaker than the rest.

Does 3D Deathase count ? If so,that
If not then it has to be Tron 2.0 - vastly underated , not only is it a continnuaton of the story linr from the superb Disney film , it features one of the best weapons - the iconic disc, and best of all lightcycles!

Dark Forces.
I think I played that game for 3 months solid, great game, and you got to shoot stormtroopers for the first time, what more do you want.
Also don't know whether it was the first FPS to let you look up and down, but it was the first FPS that I played that let you look up and down, to me an astounding innovation at the time.

Very hard choice here with some great games already mentioned, but I'm going for Unreal Tornament. Fantastic graphics, great weapon design (with multiple modes) clever A.I that "acted human" and some well designed levels and modes. Far better than that reaction test called Quake III

The TimeSplitters games are fantastic.

If that's too new then I'd nominate Doom for its fantastic level design and atmosphere.

If we are talking Mods, not the ones on scooters, its a subject larger than commercially released FPS's? :?

My favourite would have to be Natural Selection for half life. No idea if anyone still plays it, but it was just so much different to what I have seen before. Aliens vs humans is a tried and test genre but the teams were pretty well balanced from two completely different approaches.

For me this is a tough one as Return To Castle wolfenstein on the original Xbox was my first Xbox Live shooter & I loved it, spent way to much time on Rainbow 6 too. I would have to say that Rainbow 6 on the Original Xbox is my fave last gen First Person Shooter with Fallout 3 ( can I have this ) and COD WAW on the 360 being my fave curent gen First Person Shooters. :)

If Twisted Metal 2: World Tour counts, then it's that.

If not, then none as I can't stand the genre.

Many great ones, close call between Half Life/Medal of Honor/Quake II but it has to be Duke Nukem 3d. Funny as anything, some great level design, brings back a lot of good memories from the mid 90's

Did anyone play Blood? It's funnier than Duke 3D for me :) nothing like sneaking past the fanatics, set up some dynamite and watch the fireworks of blood. Caleb even mocks the bosses after killing them just like Duke! "Rest in pieces" for the win.
