DO YOU APPROVE OF 'RETRO STYLE' GAMES IN RG?

Post by Timothy Lumsden » Tue Mar 03, 2009 7:15 pm

We're talking things such as New Super Mario Bros, Contra 4 and Gauntlet DS etc.

Personally I like to get news and reviews on new 'retro style' games, but as always, interested to hear what you all think.

I get what you're saying here Timothy (really I do), but a bit harsh I think. The magazine has to compete in an aggressive market, so I guess some concessions have to be made.

I certainly do approve. I know that some may whine that nothing 'new' can be 'retro', but I see no reason why 'Retro-style' games can't appeal to retro gamers, and so they ARE relevant. If you follow me.

I know it's a ridiculous example, but imagine the Oliver twins were to write a new Dizzy game on the Speccy tomorrow. Should RG ignore it simply because its copyright date says 2009?

It makes sense to me.

I mean the magazines mostly for fans of the old games or people who are becoming fans of the old games. So to keep these fans posted on new developments involving the old games and discussing how they feel about these new developments really part of the magazine's job description. And a new game in the series would be a new development and discussing how they feel about it would be a review right? See, all makes sense

Doesnt matter what year or what machine or what media it comes on (oo-er) as long as it is a good game feature it in the mag.

If it is pap , put it on a page titled `The Page of pap`

I think you mis-read my post - I don't mind retro style games being featured

I'd say a YES to this ..... I like these 'retro style new games' etc.
If it weren't for these little gems, there's no way I'd even get a current gen system.

I say 'yes' also....

But shouldn't this thread really be in the 'Feedback' section of the forum?

My bad: I put it in the wrong place, but don't know how to move it

(am interested by the voting though - thought it might be a topic that splits opinion - almost all seem in favour )

Anyone who answered "no" to that probably doesn't like to leave the attic all too often. If they don't see it, it doesn't exist!

I don't mind. I was reading the Tomb Raider review today, but I couldn't help wondering why a 3D modern game is reviewed, but a side view scrolling platform game (LBP) isn't.

i'd like to see more reviews of old-style indie games, and maybe some doujin games too. you'd never see either of those in a "normal" games magazine, unless they were doing a special one-off feature or something

My guess (and it's just a guess) is that Tomb Raider has a retro heritage dating back to...I dont know...mid 90s on the saturn?..not sure
where it first started - but that LBP is a new franchise. I'm not saying that's right or wrong - it's just my guess.

I'm not a fan of 'new' retro games on new consoles mostly because i dont have any of the new consoles ! But can totally understand why its in the mag, plus a younger fan 'might' try a new Gauntlet game on the DS for example, get hooked and then will look up and might get into the original versions on computers or MAME etc.

Obviously the modern way of keeping these retro game franchises alive is good.

I think we should have a vote on Timothy Lumsden changing his text colour to be the same as the rest of us ! ;)
