Poll: Favourite Retro Gamer cover - (round 3) poll closed

Post by neuromancer » Sat Feb 28, 2009 3:35 pm

This is round three of my poll to celebrate my thousandth post (or so it was at the original time of writing)

[Edit: Rounds 1 - 5 and the Face-off are now closed. The Grand Final round can be found here:]
[http://www.retrogamer.net/forum/viewtop ... =1&t=13996]

As the poll will only support ten covers at a time I originally chose ten which I particularly liked, but following SirClive's suggestion I'm now running this in rounds; the winner and runner-up of each round will make it into a Grand Final poll.

Round one can be found here:http://www.retrogamer.net/forum/viewtop ... =1&t=13825

Round two can be found here: http://www.retrogamer.net/forum/viewtop ... =1&t=13830

Round four can be found here: http://www.retrogamer.net/forum/viewtop ... =1&t=13834

Round five (and final) can be found here: http://www.retrogamer.net/forum/viewtop ... =1&t=13835

To jog memories I've included the ten covers below (all images have been lifted from the back-issues section of the Imagine web-site - hopefully they won't mind!)

Red Moon, Renegade, Jetpac

Ghosts 'n' Goblins, Beat 'em ups, Monty Mole

Speedball 2, Zelda, Xevious, Retro Revolution

Although not very retro-looking, I love the Ghosts 'n' Goblins cover :D

The retro revolution one was the first cover I saw on the shelves so its an easy choice :)

This is a really tough selection, featuring all of the classic Oli Frey covers (the only new Oli cover is in the first poll). There's something incredibly iconic about the Red Moon (Level 9) issue - very dramatic, powerful and engaging; there are plenty of other great covers, but this just pips the post.

Once again the grab of the Zelda cover hardly does it justice, as the real thing is resplendent with reflected light from the mirror-effect gold laminate. I'm just not into the subject matter enough though, so it lost out.

I've added links to all five rounds to the first post on each poll, but it's unlikely that many people re-read the first post, so I'll add all five links here:

This is the toughest choice yet. I've gone for Red Moon. I love the Oli Frey covers. Especially the refreshed Zzap efforts.

Bloody hell! What are you trying to do here?????

Round 2 is full of some of the worst ones - this round is full of the best ones

After a quick toss :|

I went for Ghosts n Goblins

I know it's unbalanced - I originally selected what I reckoned to be the ten best covers (excluding Oli Freys - they're great, but I had to have some way of selecting 10 from the 43 on offer). SirClive suggested I run it in heats, so I extended it out; the later heats are roughly themed, as much as possible. It's not ideal, but that's what lack of planning gets you!

Went for Red Moon - Zelda cover is much better in the flesh , Wii is very average and Monty appalling

I've got to say I'm utterly astonished by the result (thus far) in this round - with all the tremendous Oli Frey covers on offer to see Zelda storming away - sure, it looks great in the flesh, so to speak - maybe we're all magpies at heart, attracted by shiny things!

I am shocked too! The Zelda cover was pretty - but it's not a cover that I would vote for in this thread.

Mad people!

Zelda is still streets ahead of the contenders; if nothing else I suppose we can infer at least that those voting in the poll are readers of the magazine (rather than general forum users) as only they will have seen the splendor of the Zelda cover in real life!

Eh? Out of all the choices on this vote, Zelda would be 2nd from last for me. OK, it is very pretty and shiny but also bloody boring in comparison to an Oli Frey cover.
