Feedback: Game articles w/column where pic takes 1.7 pages

Post by Thraka » Tue May 09, 2006 5:57 pm

I love how you guys cover a certain game within two pages. The text though is only along the side of the first page, which isn't bad in itself. My complaint though is about the screenshot that spans two pages. I find these really annoying and not impressive. I really have to hunt around the two pages or hold the mag away to get a nice grasp of the game's graphics and special effects maybe featured in the shot

It's really nice to have a zoomed in version, but perhaps having two screenshots on the second page, each taking 50% of the page and maybe on the first page along with the column have different artwork from advertisements from old mags and\\or the box art for the game even manual pics..

I love screenshots but the two page span is annoying and having more screenshots is always better :) And it really just comes down to having more shots per game :)

Ahhh! The 2 page screenshot argument pops up again! :D

I agree 100% with the need to loose the 1 BIG shot.

I would prefer to see something like 4 to 8 shots.

You should have made it a poll

I love em. Maybe cut the number of them though. 1 a month would be fine and then the others could have a few more large screenshots.

Or perhaps have 1 image per page, but you have to turn the mag through 90°?

Everyone in Smiths would think you were checking out a porn mag, though.

In truth, I like the Retro Revival slots. The big screenshot seems to cause some consternation, but what I like is the fact that we're effectively reviewing old games; a necessary item for a retro mag which would be difficult to realistically work into the line up any other way.

I'd fill the mag with these, I would. And I'd give away a free toffee apple to the first 104 people to say I was a genius for doing it.
Yes, my real name is Spanner and I've already heard that joke you just thought of. On the plus side, a name like this also comes with built in chat up lines, so at least the chicks dig it...

Got to agree (again) on a few more screen shots, sometimes the image is so pixalated (sp..?) that it is hard to make out if you are not already familiar with the game....

I think the main problem with these types of review is some of those graphics where not designed to be blown up that big, the picture for, I think it was elevator action 2, looked terrible, not the kind of stuff you'd expect from a professional magazine.

We're making a few adjustments to one of the DPSs next issue. It's still going to fill 3/4 of the page, but it's going to be a lot easier to see what's going on and there will be more screens as well...

Thank god!

If the space must be filled with a game image then a montage of screen shots would be the answer.

The problem is, multiple screenshots could well look messy.

I'm sure Darran is well aware of that though.

Definately, it's just a case of fitting them around the right sort of theme... Put it this way, it's not going to be a selection of randomly snapped shots...

I put a second class stamp on it and jammed it in the letterbox this morning. The hot weather made it easy to get the stamp to stick to the toffee, at least. Should be with you in two to three days. Enjoy!

I’m glad the big pixelated pictures are going.
I’ll be eagerly waiting to see what is done to replace this.

One small request though; please don’t print the text over the screenshots!

Is it just me that finds this off putting to read?
I don’t mind coloured backgrounds but some of those screen shots can be a bit garish, especially when they are blown up to page size or more!!

They aren't going completely, we're just trying to find a happy medium between those that like them and those that don't.
