Any plans for a Mame cab feature?

Post by Diamond Lights » Thu Oct 09, 2008 11:10 am

I know this was covered aaaages ago but I'd love to see a comprehensive look at the cab building scene and some of the works of art that are occurring.
A review of the professionally made cabs would be interesting too.

Just a thought. 8)

I'd just like to welcome Chris Waddle and Glen Hoddle to the forum.

I'm in the process of converting a few different cabs and would be happy to submit some stuff.

What would be good would be a how-to detailing what the different parts inside an arcade machine are, what they do, and how you can utilise, interface or otherwise convert them for use with Mame.

For a scratch build cab I would definitely ask boyo to do the business. His cabs are very...very, nice.

There is a big mame cab community out there but the resources, retailers and software is spread all over the place and it can be a bit of a minefield for a new user. A lot of people probably wouldn't even be aware of the sheer diversity of parts, options, software and businesses that service the mame community.

Took me about 3 years to get most of it straight, some of it quite literally shocking (cab building 101 - do not try to learn about cabs through trial and error). 8)

I've already converted a JAMMA Cab to MAME, my mate has his custom-built bartop (as seen recently at Fusion) and we're about to start work on converting a JAMMA driving cab, so we'd be happy to contribute what we know and also hear what others suggest about building/restoring cabs.

This is something that hasn't been covered in RG since the early days so would be a welcome feature I reckon! :)

I would literally worship an article on MAME cabs. So long as you don't call them "MAME cabs" in the article it's not even of slightly dubious legality either. Call them "Master Cabs", people will read between the lines :)

Next year I'll have about a grand to splash out on a cab, would be great to see some cool/rubbish examples in RG to help set the standard... I know there are web sites, but the blessing of Darran's beard makes all the difference...

Master - spend a hundred quid or so on an upright JAMMA cab on eBay. Then buy a decent-ish quality PC (P4 or above), and a JPAC card from ultimarc.com

For about £250 you will have a sweeeet upright mame cab (with authentic dents and scrapes on it too woooh!! ;) ) and you'll be happy and in love.

that was one of the nicest cabs I've seen, can we get him to write the article? :)
