Re: Nintendo 64, impressions from retro gamers

The N64 definitely had a distinct character. It just wasn't what I went for at the time. It did its poly texturing very well and very smooth. You didn't get odd gaps between the polys and the blending of the textures looked good over a distance, though you got that smudgy appearance close up. It had...

Re: Non Videogame Retro Content in Retro Gamer?.

The real ones I miss are Fish'n'Chips. They were resurrected a while ago, but they didn't have the same flavour. Presumably they had to take it down a notch because the amount of salt in the originals would see you in court if you fed them to a child nowadays. Hey, why are we talking about this? Oh ...

Re: **MORE** Classic Games that need a feature in the mag!

I can see a problem covering MAME in a commercial publication without coming across as endorsing the illegal download of ROMs. Every published article I've read about it is carefully worded as if treading on eggshells. It may not be worth the effort required to put it together.

Re: Commodore Techy type stuff.....

Just plug the composite output into your telly - use one of those three-plug composite/stereo-SCART adaptors if you need to. Forget about the modulator. A lot of people with Spectrums actually rewire the composite video to bypass the modulator. Ah - OK - It's not quite so simple. You'd need to get h...

Re: Worst Console-To-Handheld Port?

"Capcom Classics Mini-Mix" Those awful NES re-hashes of Strider , Bionic Commando and Final Fight ported to a single under-used GBA cartridge. They'd barely be passable on the GB Color, never mind the Advance. On second thoughts, as ports go, it was fairly accurate - recapturing all the awfulness of...

Re: gameboy micro

Wouldn't you need a magnifying glass to play that on a micro? ;) My main man "thehive" has put a neat feature on it where you can individually scale the thirds of the screen, so for games that have the score board in the bottom third you can shrink that down and have the playing window full size an...

Re: Problem At Work. Any Advice Please?

Even if you can't get a solicitor, don't go into the thing alone. Have a friend or colleague accompany you. If they refuse, and you get sacked, then that's definitely something you can bring up in a wrongful dismissal case. (Although if you've worked there less than a year, you can't bring one). As ...

I can play Space Harrier anywhere. And with the Speccy emulator on a blown flash cartridge, I can play Manic Miner, Head Over Heels, Chronos or Atic Atac too. Sorry, this isn't helping, is it?

Re: Hot on the tail of the 'Simon' controversy!

I only recently got hold of the keyring version of G&W Super Mario Bros. (not the dual-screen conveyor game, the scrolling one) and was really impressed by the variety of levels in the game. Mario's Cement Factory is a lovely design for a static screen game, and I have a secret love of those three-l...

Re: Worst Console-To-Handheld Port?

Zool to the Gameboy. OK, maybe it was made for the Amiga originally, but still, it must have been the most ill-advised conversion ever. Convert a fast full-screen-scrolling game to a device with a bit of lag in its display and you get a big blurry mess. Processor-wise it could handle it, but the mo...

Re: Thoughts on Sonic 4 please

The side-on scenes in Sonic Unleashed are what everybody liked and wanted more of. There's no reason why you can't use 3D objects and scenery with a 2D plane of play. It certainly makes better use of the technology available. Klonoa and Pandemonium did it brilliantly back on the PS1 and Sonic Unleas...
