Re: First home game u played that was closest 2 arcade quali

But really it wasn't until Dreamcast that the arcade really came into the home. Neo Geo says hi. Although it was darn expensive (both, the system and the games), it did deliver "Arcade-perfect" conversions into homes (of rich kids). ColecoVision, PC Engine, 32X, 3DO, PSX, Amiga and DOS PC al...

Re: You vs yer kids!

Think Mario Kart has a lot of luck involved? Against my two daughters I can't win a single race any more (DD or Wii). I used to give them a lap before I started!

Re: First home game u played that was closest 2 arcade quali

There's Pong and Combat on the 2600. I remember playing a pretty accurate port of Space Invaders on the Apple IIe. The Sega Saturn and PS1 did some great jobs of 32bit shmups. The Saturn had some really nice Capcom 4MB expanded games too. But really it wasn't until Dreamcast that the arcade really c...

Re: Your go-to 8-bit game

Dropzone on the NES

Thrust, JSW, Chuckie egg on 8 bit micro. Played those on the 464. Chuckie Egg on the BBC was better of course.

2600 - Megamania, Super Breakout, Kaboom, Warlords.

Re: Sega Saturn Collecting

Finding boxed games in good condition is getting tougher - those stupid cardboard covers! In the US we got hard plastic boxes. They are pretty brittle though. I have a couple of US Saturn games and I reckon the cases would shatter easily. They look far nicer though. Later PAL Saturn releases got DV...

Re: Digital games. Another reason why I have an issue.

The main issue I have with digital releases is that you can't create a collection. Issues arising from service termination can be got around, though not always legally or morally - but for those of us who like to build, prune and maintain a collection that isn't really the case any more and it's a t...

Re: Greatest Apple II games

The Apple II The year was '79-80. That's makes me 13-14 at the time. My headmaster saw computing as the next big thing and was very enthusiastic. So much so he raided the school funds to get a couple of Apple IIes with floppy drives and monitors. God Bless him. I wrote my first bit of code as part o...

Re: Where does "Retro" end?

I think the "-2 gen" stipulation is a good rule of thumb. The 360 is in transition. It isn't retro but it certainly isn't current gen. So the games will gradually dry up and having another rule of retro means having no games being published outside indie is another indicator. I don't believe in havi...

Re: Genuinely funny moments in games

First game to actually make me laugh out loud was Punch Out on the NES. Purely from the characterisation and the animation in the game.

Typing of the Dead is a funny game. The word and phrase list is genius.

Re: Sega Saturn Collecting

Saturn games now seem to be at a premium unfortunately. There is no way I could justify buying what I now own at today's prices. If importing and you don't want to mod, then get an NTSC console and use an AR cart to cover US, JP games and non-optimised PAL games which run fine at 60Hz. By mixing and...

Re: Gamecube and Gameboy Advance connectivity

Pacman Versus is the jewel in the crown of GC/GBA linkup. You really need to use Wavebirds to stop getting in a tangle but it's a great multiplayer experience. When it comes to DS and Wii - The Wii version of Guitar Hero 5 supports it. You have 2 vs 2 battles with 2 guitars and 2 DS-es. The DS playe...

Re: What's Your Favourite Vector Arcade Game?

It's really close between Tempest and Asteroids Deluxe. Deluxe has shields instead of hyperspace and so removes the luck element. It also has the killer satellites. The game puts paid to the lurking strategy and overall is a far better game than the original. Tempest is just a beautiful abstract exp...

Re: Which 6th gen console was your fave?

I find it rather difficult to separate that gen. Right off I can dismiss the Oldbox. It never had much to interest me . I'd like to have one for PD Orta and maybe for its version of Outrun which is supposed to run smoother than the PS2 version - but I don't think that's enough to justify getting one...
