You can grab an iCade Core on eBay right now for just 30 quid, by the way: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ION-iCade-Cor ... 460b9b69df

Re: The Missing Retro Gamer features

The TRS-80, 'lovingly' referred to as the 'trash 80' by a number of the US people I've interviewed!

Re: Retro Gamer Issue 112 - Feedback Thread

Pfffffffffft - Gawd help RG if they feature Space Invaders or Pac Man again or it'll take up the entire mag. Quite. Looking at the referenced example, I don't see that as an error—it's just pointing out some of the conversions. When space is restricted, you have to put in whatever you can make fit....

Re: Retro Gamer Issue 112 - Feedback Thread

I'd say a Dizzy game might have been possible, but not a total series reimagining that required such a colossal sum of money. Around the same time as the Dizzy Kickstarter, an indie was trying to find something similar for a few grand—quite a few people started pushing his game over the Olivers’ one...

Another thought is apple may leave it up seeing as you can do emulation on other phones. They need all the help in keeping dominant in the phone market. I'm sure having sold 47.8 million iPhones in the previous quarter, maintaining the company's massive majority in terms of profits, and maintaining...

To clarify, not necessarily for Retro Gamer, but absolutely with some of the other titles I write for and also many consumer mags. That's why you see so many covers with "the 50 best [thing]".

Re: Retro Gamer Issue 112 - Feedback Thread

I'd love to be a fly on the wall of a sales meeting about this one. Typically, 'number' covers tend to sell very well in tech mags and also many consumer mags (hence why there are so many '50 blah blah blah' covers), and it'd be interesting to discover if this is also true for RG. As it is, I rather...

Re: Retro Gamer Issue 111 - Feedback Thread

Yup. And with Doug Smith, it's also amusing that not only did he not really care much about games, but he also didn't give a monkey's about the Apple II—it was just a machine he used because the person he lived with had one. It makes you realise how random it was that Lode Runner came to be in any f...

Re: Retro Gamer Issue 111 - Feedback Thread

@ncf1: Well, as per the article I wrote for the current issue, the guy who created Lode Runner precursor Suicide (which was reworked as the VAX game that was subsequently converted by Doug Smith to Miner and then Lode Runner on the Apple II) was inspired by a friend's description of a game he'd play...

Re: Much more DOS and old PC gaming coverage please!!

I agree completely, however I hope the 'rule' is compensated for by a little common sense. Take for instance, Microsoft Flight Simulator Series. The original game originated elsewhere (The Apple 2 - as has been pointed out to me today), however, it cannot be denied that the Series is synonymous wit...

Re: The Missing Retro Gamer features

On making-ofs, they are, for me, the core of Retro Gamer, and provide valuable insight into videogaming's history. It's all very well to have article's of opinion and even articles of research about a subject, but it's another entirely to hear from people who made the games how they came to be. They...

Re: iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch game recommendations

The Room was a lovely surprise (on the iPad at least—I'm not sure how well it plays on the smaller iPhone). My advice for newcomers: play in a dark, silent room, and, where possible, avoid the clues unless you get really stuck. It becomes a really immersive and rewarding experience.

Re: iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch game recommendations

Check out the App Store reviews for 4oD. Last time I looked, it was mostly 1-star rants about the corporation removing AirPlay. If you use it now, I think it specifically blocks the mirroring, using a trick that was actually designed to enable a dual-screen experience. (Real Racing 2, for example, u...

Re: iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch game recommendations

So Blinkbox allows HDMI out from an iPad to a TV? Gah. Yet another service with some really awful deals with providers, then. Channel 4's the same. It removed AirPlay from the 4oD app, due to legal issues. Clearly, the TV and film industry needs to realise that streaming isn't some kind of evil that...

Re: Retro Gamer Issue 111 - Feedback Thread

Constructive criticism is helpful, but just slagging it off and saying the magazine was really poor is a waste of everyones time. Mm. For those of us who work on the magazine—and especially the in-house guys—we thrive on constructive comments. That goes for praise as much as criticism. We want to k...
