Re: For the mag: budget games

I'm compiling a list of cassette budget games (those costing around £2.99 or less or thereabouts). What three games would you put on it? On the C64: Kikstart II, Thrust and Zolyx. These on the basis they still hold up for me today. Honourable mention goes to Heavy Metal Paradroid, but that's essent...

Re: iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch game recommendations

I tried it a while back. So much potential, but shooting was on a hair-trigger. I'll have to check it again and see if things have improved. EDIT: I just had a go on the iPad. It's improved somewhat, but the shooting still seems off to me. The other controls are pleasingly Sensi-like, albeit hampere...

Re: The Missing Retro Gamer features

In the "XX years old" series you have missed out System 3? I have to say, I wonder what the infatuation is with the 'xx years' thing. I guess it's an excuse for a look back, but these days, you can swing a cat and crack its head on a bunch of retro-gaming companies that'd be 20, 25, 30 or 35 years ...

Re: The Edge: 8-Bit software house in IP troll scandal.

So much terrible/inaccurate reporting in general on this, though. Not everything's been cancelled, Langdell's still fighting and, most importantly, he's still filing for new Edge-related marks. Also, this is US-based, and so there's still a ton of stuff that needs dealing with elsewhere, such as in ...

Room5 wrote:the pledge level structure has been a bit of a shambles
Sadly, it's often the way for projects that either aren't doing well (ProPinball) or ones that keep wanting to up the ante regarding what they might achieve. I pledged in the end, but only for the DVD. The audio stuff seemed oddly expensive.

Re: Retro Gamer Issue 115 - Feedback Thread

Would love to know what his musical influences were back then when he started....(apart from the god awful Popcorn) I can't recall what's in the mag (and my copy's not in the office), but here's the relevant unedited sections of the interview: I remember one of the first pop music pieces I heard th...

Re: iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch game recommendations

I do like the Elite Speccy app but yeah the filesize seemed quite large and its a bit of a faff at times. Shame its so difficult to get the copyright for a lot of games as a fair few of their packs (eg the Nexus one) didnt have any stunning games. I'm not a big fan of the pack thing. Companies bulk...

Re: iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch game recommendations

The contrast with the well-healed composers of 80’s pop music is stark. Well, most of those people still get royalties, even if the record companies do their best to fiddle the figures and minimise what they pay. With games, the publishers are who reap the rewards, with relatively few of the people...

Re: iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch game recommendations

Elite has a slightly… odd view at times when it comes to emulation. It's certainly notable that the text refers to publishers and not developers. These days, those 8-bit properties that have known ownership often lie with companies that purchased them in relative fire-sales for almost nothing. For t...

Re: iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch game recommendations

When I last spoke to Jeff, he said the bulk of the style of his games was simply down to what he's capable of creating himself. He could get an artist in, but if he's barely making ends meet right now, how's he going to pay for someone to do the art for a new title? I suppose the content could be ma...

Re: iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch game recommendations

To clarify, I'm not suggesting Minter's games should be troubling the top ten—there's a ton of ground between fully mainstream and extreme niche (and I certainly don't believe Minter's games sit at the latter end of that spectrum anyway, although they're clearly beyond the mid point on that scale). ...

Re: iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch game recommendations

Really niche stuff? I'd agree he has quirky content and Phythonesque humour (also known as character), but of the game's he's released, you have at least a few that could have had some seriously mass appeal, such as Minotron, Super Ox Wars, Gridrunner and GoatUp. In my magical world of infinite mon...

Re: iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch game recommendations

It depends on the site. From my research on this, the sites you'd actually care about appearing on don't tend to do this—just the seedier (or, occasionally, more niche) end of the scale does. I suspect with Goatup 2, releasing the game during GDC didn't really help, but it's still baffling to see ze...

Re: iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch game recommendations

It's worth noting that Llamasoft hasn't stated online that it's no longer going to do any iOS games, but it looks like—for the near future—it won't be working iOS-first. Instead, the Android page states larger PC/Mac projects that might then end up on mobile. Given the nature of the industry right n...

Re: iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch game recommendations

^Yeah its a shame, also too many people seem to wait for a price drop. I mean in the year 2013 people wait to save a pound or 69p ?!? Are things that bad ? Then all we get is freemium crap as indie devs cant afford to release games sadly. Even on the YakYak forum, someone was moaning about the pric...
