Re: Retro consoles on a 4ktv

What it comes down to is that old consoles are typically designed to output a 240p signal to a CRT display that not only has a one on one correspondence to the scanlines that are output, but also displays its pixels as fuzzy blobs rather than sharp solid blocks. This does a good job of smoothing out...

Re: Music Thread

I'd think it good if you can still listen to contemporary pop music and find stuff you like, because most of us have our taste pretty much set in stone by the time we reach thirty and our absolute favourites are usually what we listened to in our early teens. Anyway, I guess here is as good a place ...

Re: Nintendo Switch Discussion

Yeah, about the only thing the reviewers can agree upon with Travis Strikes Again is that it's weird. Otherwise there are a lot of complaints about it being a low-budget effort with sub-par visuals and repetitive gameplay. As for the SNES games, it's more of a case of when rather than if. And, much ...

Re: War, war never changes except when it crashes

There's a guide here, but it's not for the faint of heart:

My tip would be to play New Vegas instead. Not only will it work without a ton of third party mods, but it's a better game too.

Re: Android handhelds

One thing I'll say for the Vita though is that nothing emulates the PSP as well as that machine's backwards compatibility with it. Ditto for the 3DS when it comes to playing DS games.

Re: Android handhelds

Wouldn't something like a modded Vita be better anyway? Only if you like bad emulators for most systems; Retroarch can't even run SNES games at full speed on it, for instance. Realistically it was hacked far too late to build up the same kind of scene that the PSP had and it's very underpowered com...

Re: Android handhelds

Yeah, they're basically second division phone tech, minus a lot of the features you don't really need in a gaming device. The problem with just using your phone though is that games and emulators are notoriously hard on batteries and you'll be lucky to get a couple of hours gaming between charges. A...

Re: 2018 Game Of The Year

Not sure what categories I'd shoehorn them all into, but I'll go for: Dead Cells (PC) - Comparisons with Hollow Knight are obvious due to the superficial similarities, but it's a very different game to play showing that there's plenty of life left in the old roguelike genre. Into The Breach (PC) - X...

Re: Sony announces Playstation 1 Classic

Pi is just a PC. I can't see why people are having a problem with that. It was always the case, it was designed as a cheap PC for kids to learn how to code and do electronic projects with. Yeah, if you put Raspbian on it, it's pretty obvious that you can use it as more or less functional PC. You ge...

Re: Sony announces Playstation 1 Classic

I'd think that the Raspberry Pi is vastly superior to the XBox as an emulation/media machine. Much smaller. You can fit a Pi 0 inside an Xbox controller, even. Go for a Pi 3 in preference though, unless you need something ultra-portable. Very low power. You may even be able to run it from USB port i...

Re: Buying CD's

I got a shedload of boxed sets for Christmas this year.

While digital formats do a pretty good job of getting you the music - and yeah, I'll be ripping all the CDs and streaming them - there's no substitute for the lavish packaging, booklets, etc. that all add to the experience.

Re: Emuparadise Shuts Up Shop

I don't think he was quite a one hit wonder, but his ability to get into the charts certainly took a dive a few years back. He must have still had enough fans prepared to by overpriced Chinese tat with his brand slapped on it though, and just didn't realize that you can't do that with their games co...

Re: What Films/TV Have you Watched Recently?

Apparently 'Gasman' did the Speccy 'fake' games in that Bandersnatch episode. Was hoping it was going to be one of the current homebrew guys we know. Bet he was excited as hell to work on those (and must have been so difficult keeping it a secret). I didnt bother checking out tons of final scenes e...

Re: What Films/TV Have you Watched Recently?

Black Mirror: Bandersnatch on Netflix It's part 80s nostalgia trip, part bad acid trip, and an interactive movie where you get to make choices that affect the direction of the story. I guess that makes it a game, at least as much as Dragon's Lair is It's also set in 1984 so that makes it a game with...
