I'd think an important factor was that, whilst there was money in it, a lot of ports at the time were slow, buggy and rather unfaithful to the original versions. Ultimate were a company that took a lot of pride in their products, and didn't want to see this happening to their games. At least that th...

Love everything Sega but don't see the point really - what could it possibly offer that the Xbox, PS3, Wii doesn't? Well, it's a portable so it's up against the DS (woefully underpowered) and the PSP (terrible ergonomics) so with a suitable CPU and an ability to load games in seconds rather than mi...

Dragon's Lair - Quite a nifty technical achievement, and some good animation in parts too, but completely lacking when it comes to gameplay. How many people praise Dragon's Lair as a game though? Everybody says the same things you just did - so how can it be overrated? Tabe I suppose it's not so mu...

Basically, the ones I grew up with: 1. ZX Spectrum Best game: Lords Of Midnight 2. Atari ST Best game: Carrier Command 3. Amstrad CPC Best game: Head Over Heels 4. BBC Micro Best game: Elite 5. ZX81 Best game: Black Crystal I don't think I'll bother with worst games; memory tends to fade away the tr...

Originality The first good game you play in a given genre is generally going to be the best one you ever see. You might find others that have a few small incremental improvements, but nothing is ever going to wow you as much unless it similarly defines its own genre. By way of example there are seem...

Damn that seriously is a good price. I've got the 4211, if that ones down to 200 quid thats a true bargain. I had a quick peek on the website and it's still £279.99 there. So it's either a special to that particular store or some other product. As Overheat said, Advent is just the DSG (Dixons, Cur...

I'd say that the Eee PC 1000 is the one to go for at the moment, if you've got the money. It's got a spec pretty similar to the Advent 4211 but with the addition of a battery life of up to 7 hours which is about twice as long. That said, it costs a fair bit more and if you don't need that much time ...

Actually no it isn't, several of those were released by the publishers for distribution from their own site only. The Codemasters ones for a start. From the licence agreement they even supply. YOU SHALL NOT: * Copy the Program. * Sell, rent, lease, license, distribute or otherwise transfer or make ...

Re: Best UK-made 8-bitter, games-wise
Price was certainly a factor. In 1982 a 48K Spectrum cost £175, and the Commodore 64 and BBC Micro were around £400. Even the VIC-20 cost around £200 and that was for a machine with 5K RAM and very limited graphical capabilities. The Commodore 64 came down in price over the years and picked up a ...

From what I can gather, they took a deliberate decision not to build any complete prototypes as one-offs of some of the components cost nearly as much as a full production run of them. I'm sure that this saved a ton of money, but fingers crossed that they don't run into any unforeseen problems at th...

That's five definite killer apps for the ST there. I'd guess that Kick Off 2 is yet to come, but then again Xenon placed higher than Xenon 2, so maybe we'll be in for another surprise. Captive is a great game and one I spent loads of time on. I don't think I'll keep at it for 40 years though as, onc...
