Re: Retro Gamer - Issue 141

Am currently reading the issue and it's a step above the previous ones. Three notes: -the black 'redaction' bars didn't work so good as I found myself as well wondering what they were; I did think of "censorship" but the placement made it unclear - I thought it might be a glitch since nothing seemed...

Re: User-generated content

Not really. Unfortunately people are usually quite passive when it comes to complaining (it's easier to do anyhow :D ) so they probably won't write in. As for stop buying it, I can think of four people, off the top of my head, who have done so in the last year. Sure, you may gain new readership, but...

Re: User-generated content

Thankfully, your opinion is not really shared by anyone here as we enjoy seeing some forum content in the mag, but you're allowed a voice the same as everyone else. :D Well, that's to be expected, isn't it? :D I mean, we're *in* the forum itself! But from discussing with others and reading other pe...

Re: User-generated content

Well, without distorting it, at the very least.

Re: User-generated content

Pretty amazing how things you say can get distorted by people who insist (as is their right) on their ideas... -As I think I made made abundantly clear, I differentiate between user-inspired content (such as best-xx) and user-generated content. Where on earth did I say there must be no input? And ho...

Re: User-generated content

...regurgitating stuff from a forum does nothing for the magazine's quality. I'd argue that getting the community involved and having buy-in via getting their thoughts published is one of the core ingredients in a successful magazine. The all time great mags all had reader participation in various ...

Re: User-generated content

I think people underestimate the time and effort that goes into some of the "user generated" content though. Take the recent Top 25 articles. They are much more than just a list. But this is precisely what I'm saying. I don't have an issue with content that interacts with or is based on forum feedb...

Re: User-generated content

@Darran:Sure, let's agree to disagree, but you didn't address any of my specific points :) I understand why Back to the 70s would be difficult, but then again I've got faith in RG's staff; you've pulled amazing feats in the past so I'm sure it could be done with some research... My only "concern" (w...

Re: User-generated content

Hello Darran, thanks for jumping in :) I'll have to disagree though - regurgitation is not in the eye of the beholder; if you copy it, verbatim (maxell? Amsoft?) then it's not much more than that. It's like having a company that runs two TV channels and saying, on one "oh, you don't want to watch ou...

Re: User-generated content

Ah, the thought did cross my mind about the 80s but I dismissed it for some reason (not enough caffeine when I was writing the OP). Bummer! Indeed a trip to the '70s would be really great - lots of computer content, but I love those pages for their cultural tidbits too. As a matter of fact I've been...

Re: User-generated content

Oh, I understand both of your points perfectly, but that was not the issue I raised. Sure, it promotes the community, but regurgitating stuff from a forum does nothing for the magazine's quality. As I said, if I'm interested in what other guys like me are saying I can very well follow them on Twitte...

I was a few issues behind on my RG reading but I'm now catching up... And I was surprised, not in a good way, by two additions I saw: -first, the Discuss page. I really don't get all the stuff that gets pulled offline and put into the magazine. If I want to read other people's opinions I just go onl...

Yeah, I was thinking of Tennis, the one that engineer guy made in that lab for the visitors...

But, then again, they also had quite complex electromechanical games!
