Biggest surprise/thing you learnt from reading Retro Gamer?

Growing up, I believed that companies like Microsphere and Digital Integration were massive corporate companies that had huge glass tower blocks in Canary Wharf and such like; it’s hard to believe that so many games which have influenced popular culture and the market going forward were made in peop...

Retro Arcades in Budget Holiday Camps/Parks

I remember about seven years ago that I went on the cheapest of cheap “Sun £9.99” holidays to Caister in Norfolk; we got our money’s worth, just about… But, in the midst of all that tedium, there was an arcade, one which looked like it hadn’t been tampered with for many years – this man proudly open...

Re: Voice acting in games

Always amazed that they never had some proof-checking all the dialogue before they were released.

The same could be said for early arcade video games - it was all "CHALLENGE NOW FOR EXCITING FIGHT!" and things; there should have been someone there who knew a bit about our fine language surely?

First home game u played that was closest 2 arcade quality?

Most of us of a certain age grew up with the abject disappointment of seeing lots of screenshots and previews in Crash Magazine, C & VG and the like, which would remain as we were opening the box until the game loaded and, most of the time you thought, is that it? What was the first game you ever pl...

Re: Retro arcade soccer game?

Yes, definitely Hat Trick Hero, which is more commonly known as Football Champ or Euro Football Champ. I owed the JAMMA board for some time.. Great game, very much the "Ready to Rumble" of Football Sims where they suspend certain elements of reality in order to make a more entertaining game. The fou...

Re: Arcades–thrill from thought of losing money, or from gam

Some excellent opinions and memories here, fascinating stuff. Another point would be that there were older gamers too back in the day; there was one guy, about 27, who the other kids would swarm round because you knew he always spent about 20/30 quid and often let one of us have a few games with him...

Re: Blue Plaque for Matthew Smith in Holt Road?

I think you're right, different borough's seem to have different stipulations. Others seem to be open to making exceptions, wonder whether Liverpool would be? Probably not, but it is possible.. Unless I'm much mistaken, it's only the London Borough of Southwark that's allowed living people to be com...

Re: Blue Plaque for Matthew Smith in Holt Road?

True, I don't think there has been much at all for actual game programmers though - I don't think Jez San would have received his OBE without his other interests/technological skills. His story is almost unique; no-one expected that a computer game could become a household name, no-one believed that...

Re: Blue Plaque for Matthew Smith in Holt Road?

Since 2003, living people may be commemorated, through popular vote, following public nomination. I don't see this as beyond the realms of possibility; a Facebook Group or online petition would undoubtedly attract thousands. Gaming needs more recognition in historical terms as a pastime, and a cultu...

Blue Plaque for Matthew Smith in Holt Road?

As most gamers know, Manic Miner was the first computer game in this country to sell over five million copies. Blue Plaques have been around for 150 years across the country, so their references are largely historical, even though you are starting to see some new names being recognized for various c...

Re: Arcades–thrill from thought of losing money, or from gam

Oh yes of course, money was a HUGE factor in gameplay, and everything to do with playing arcade games. If you had a few extra pounds from somewhere, like a birthday or something, you were automatically happier than if you had about a quid! If I could complete the game in one credit, then I felt like...

Wow - never knew that about Mr Do! I played that game a great deal but never saw hide nor hare of the diamond. Thanks for sending a picture of the screen - great stuff.

Winning an extra credit on an Arcade Machine

Can only remember one instance of this. A lot of games obviously offer incentives and bonuses to continue the game but I can only remember one machine ever offering an actual credit. The game was "Bomb Jack" - a great game with a superb ZX Spectrum conversion. It was as rare as hell's teeth but once...
