Re: Much more DOS and old PC gaming coverage please!!

I'm glad to hear that! The early to mid 90's of PC gaming is filled with forgotten classics of brilliant games. If I can give some ideas of what you could feature in the future (apologies if they have already appeared in the mag, but there was a 16 month gap ;) ) : Pizza Tycoon : one of the first Ty...

Re: Much more DOS and old PC gaming coverage please!!

I didn't resubscribe a year or two back because I thought the mag was horribly biased against PC gaming (which is my favorite retro platform for many reasons along with the Amiga) - I even posted a dozen examples on this forum (like, for example, how a Grand Theft Auto article only mentioned the Pla...

Re: RG Android app?

If they don't want my money, sucks to be them. PC Gamer, Edge, etc. already moved to Zinio along with many other gaming mags and their prices are very reasonable but making this iOS only means they're being very short-sighted.

Played and loved Dragon Age 1, played an hour of Dragon Age 2, and hated it so didn't play it any more

Re: So, who doesn't give a crap about Zelda?

To me, Zelda was never really an RPG either. This topic made me think about games and how they age with time. I often replay old NES, SNES etc. games using emulators but, except for a few really good ones, most just feel ... old. Game elements that have long been considered "bad" (deaths you can't a...

Re: So, who doesn't give a crap about Zelda?

Weeelll, if you're (@ the OP) basing your opinion of 'The Legend Of Zelda' purely on how decent you think The Phantom Hourglass was and are dismissing every other Zelda game ever, then there are definitely questions to be asked there... Especially since I thought Phantom was AWFUL! The whole...

Re: Games journalist gets it wrong, sort of apologises

Sadly enough, game journalism is still pretty bad even today. It's funny to see the gaming press comment on how games aren't taken seriously when the journalists are all too often completely useless. If I open any magazine or newspaper, I'll find a gaming column written by some guy who has played a ...

Re: What makes a great 2D platform game?

Let's see: - I like a mobile character - good hitboxes (many old NES games had invisible squares behind a sprite and even when you cleanly avoided a sprite, you were still dead, booooo) - the ability to look up and down - no hidden death traps that you can't avoid - no pixel perfect jumps - a nice v...

Re: So, who doesn't give a crap about Zelda?

I find Zelda to be a mixed bag. Here's why: - the series hasn't really evolved that much which is good in a way, but it also never evolved past its flaws, which is bad - the music is usually great and the theme song is brilliant and sets the mood - the dialog has never been that good, meaning that, ...

Re: Getting this off my chest: unbalanced content

So basically this is one of those. "It's not fair, my favourite system doesn't get the coverage it deserves" types of threads? Don't worry, they always crop up and and I won't hold it against you. You like the PC and you want more coverage, can't say fairer than that. But what happens when we incre...

Re: Getting this off my chest: unbalanced content

The second point I couldn't be happier about. I hate PCs. I think of retro PC games as like poor versions of Amiga games (where they had Amiga style games). Only the 3D ones were better, and that's going away from the whole Retro vibe. The third part I don't fully understand. The style of games I'm...

Re: Getting this off my chest: unbalanced content

The Amiga gets too much coverage??? If I was to criticise I would say there is too little Amiga/ST in there. Well, the Spectrum gets the most attention in general - the Amiga just gets a lot more "love" when 16-bit games are mentioned. I know it used to be PC vs Amiga at the time (I collect Amiga P...

Re: Getting this off my chest: unbalanced content

Its surprising really that a UK mag would lean towards the UK gaming scene. PC gaming belongs to the UK scene as well. As I said, the PC took over from Amiga and most PC gamers in the UK in the early 90s were ex-Amiga gamers. It's just that they ignore the PC side for some weird reason, even...

Getting this off my chest: unbalanced content

I bought about three quarters of all issues of Retro Gamer half a year ago on ebay. I also bought a subscription and both DVDs with the mag PDF files. Since then, it's become prime bathroom reading material. Over this half year, I went through 30 issues or so, each week finishing another one, and I ...

Re: Best PC for older PC games

There IS no "best PC" for retro gaming I'm afraid. My PC was an IBM Aptiva 166 with 64MB memory and a 3DFX memory card + Sound Blaster AWE 64. For me this was excellent to play most 3DFX games BUT not all of them. Unreal would still be very slow, for example. Yet, if I went with a P233 MMX, some gam...
