Re: [EBAY] Atari XE System (NIB)

As far as I know, Missile command was built into all of them. Start without keyboard plugged in, it boots right into it.

Most seems to ship with carts of barnyard blaster (+light gun) and flight sim.

Re: Should I buy....an Atari ST

At the time (late 80's), the ST was more popular round here, about £100 cheaper than the Amiga, it was very capable, but the Amiga had the edge in most things. We did not think the edge was worth the £100 extra. The Amiga is even slightly better at music, but the lack of midi port meant that better ...

Re: I really like the Amiga

Acorn Archimedes A3000 is the rather left field rival. Never became as popular as it should have as it was an impressive machine. The Atari ST STF and STFM, cheaper than a miggy at the time, not quite as high end powerful (less colours on screen in game play being the main noticeable difference) but...

Re: Finally got an Atari... any suggestions?

If it is a UK 65xe, the cartridge port is at the back. The FAQ is here: http://faqs.cs.uu.nl/na-dir/atari-8-bit/faq.html Key things to remember: Holding down option when you power up switches basic off (for most games). Holding down start when you power up, starts the cassette deck. (most cassette g...

Re: Atari Mods

Not a huge amount that I am aware of. It was a very simple console. I have seen online a mod for video output to scart/s-video (native it is only a TV AV out)but that is about it. I would have suspected that if there was some way to create a multi-cart that could make use of sd cards and emulator im...

Re: Sources for UK console sales?

maybe it was the circle I was moving in, the ST was the biggie at the end of the 80's, but the Amiga gained the edge in the 90's for a brief flourish on top before 386/486 PCs with super VGA and Soundblasters became the big thing around 93/94

Re: Recommend me some Atari XE/XL games, please

Funny coz the Xmas I got mine (1986), my cousin got one and 3 of my mates did too. I think Curry's/Dixons were selling a sub £100 package with a 800XL, 1010 Tape Deck and 6 Atarisoft games or something like that. I remember reading Atari User in early 1987 saying that loads of machines had been sol...

Re: Recommend me some Atari XE/XL games, please

Star Raiders, it is what hooked me to the Atari. MULE still stands up for group play. Activision had some great games. Accolade as well, (ex atari staff in both companies) River Raid and Megamania are the two activision games I remember most fondly. Epyx, I always liked the dunjonquest/Asphai games....

Re: Recommend me some Atari XE/XL games, please

So basically when games were designed with the A8 in mind , they were usually (graphically at least) better than the ports to other machines But when the reverse was true , the games ended up pretty awful looking. It seems to me that whilst many of the other 8-bits were jack of all trades , able to...

Re: What should be my first retro console?

When I started collecting machines I'd not had as a kid, the first thing I went for was a Megadrive .... I always wanted one. To me that is the way to approach it. The Original playstation, the Megadrive and the NES are all well supported, even now. The Atari 2600/7800 is a nice machine (7800 a lat...

Re: Recommend me some Atari XE/XL games, please

Lots of great games mentioned. Star Raiders is the must have. M.U.L.E. if you can get it as it is a good little almost a board game. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ltmsbvuafC4 I liked Phantom. A sort of ghostbusters played as alien breed A 'new game' worth getting is Yomp! As for loading them, I hav...

New tech for old kit? Article idea?

Has anyone suggested an article on home brew/hobby industry hardware for some of our old favorite computers? I've noticed several storage devices out there that tend to load faster than than tape or disk, that would let you load from compact flash or SD cards so you can even move files from your PC ...

Re: Amiga PCMCIA Compact Flash reader/writer?

I have one of the ebay ones. The eBay ones have different software to the ones from amiga kit uk. The amiga kit has software that is easier to use, more intuitive. The ebay ones are confusing to use and not at all intuitive. http://www.amigakit.co.uk/ There is some youtube links at the bottom showin...

Re: Gaming inventions that FAILED!!!

Virtual reality systems are certainly something that seems never to have re-appeared. Along with their associated goggles and the powerglove! Computers that definitely were an epic fail to the point of "why did they bother/what where they on!" would be the Commodore +4/C16 (not compatible with the C...
