Re: Were Atari really any good at making home consoles.

A few things you're confusing or mishmashing together, plus a dab of armchair hindisight without understanding the factors in place at the time.. Atari made splendid consoles. Their failing was an inability to move away from their arcade heritage and start producing enough games in the contemporary ...

Re: Were Atari really any good at making home consoles.

I think my biggest problem with this thread is you guys are talking about two completely different companies as if they're a single entity. Atari Inc. made their own consoles and did all their own console research, save for GCC's MARIA which was a side project done outside of Atari and pitched to th...

Re: This is the worst game I've ever played

I really liked Pacman on the Atari VCS, I still do, in spite of its infamy. I believe it was thrown together in a couple of weeks as a prototype to prove the game could be done and the developer was horrified when management decided it was good enough to go with. It actually sold quite a lot of cop...

Re: This is the worst game I've ever played

Atari 2600 Pac man. Godawful. And proven to be godawful when the excellent Ms Pac was released for 2600...proving it was just shoddy Not really an apt comparison, Ms. Pac-Man had a larger ROM and wasn't a two player game (which opened up more of the extremely limited RAM). You can read the story be...

Re: Retro Gamer and the Amstrad CPC 464

The biggest problem with Atari ST is that people simply don't submit articles about it. Plus it rarely seems to have amazing exclusive games, as there's lots of crossover with the Amiga. The Amstrad has the same issue in that regards. That non-exclusive part is because by the late 80s a lot of deve...

Re: User-generated content

Back to the 70s would be great, a history of pre videogames, a peek into the electromechanical games and how they crossed over, slowly evolving into first analogue computers and then the digital age. I was asked to do a section for that once, but the problem is the other "Back to..." sections rely ...

Much as I'd love to, I think most of the books RG puts out are collections of previous articles, and they wouldn't have the budget to pay someone to write that much new content.

Re: what advice would you give to a new retro gamer

I still think how lucky we are. Most of us here are mid-late 30's or early 40's We've been there for practically the 'birth' of videogaming when it became huge with the Atari 2600, the great 8 bits of the 80's. The 16 bits of the 90's, And then you can confuse him with the fact that the 2600 and ot...

Re: Games with digitised graphics

Let's not forget Fire Fox from '83, the premier Laser Disc game alongside Dragon's Lair: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ncl4lGl2CZ4 That game blew people's minds back then when it came to visuals. Unsurprisingly, it was a shallow and short game which may be the "moral of this story" (good graphics...

Re: Games with digitised graphics

You should probably try the arcade Journey Escape at least once, just to play the first game the used digitised graphics (that I'm aware of). Though I'm not sure if MAME reproduces the audio tape recordings of the band that would play during the game sometimes as well. This youtube clip of it doesn'...

Thanks to everyone on the positive reception to my TI article. Great to hear. A note on the TI feature, what landfill did you get the machines in the pictures from?, Fluffy hell they must have had a hard life. I haven't seen the printed article yet (I just submit the text and pics and the RG team do...

Re: Retro Gamer - Issue 139

Just got the most awesome note from Joyce Weisbecker, the daughter of the man who created the little known and often maligned RCA Studio II games console featured in this issue. This article was the first to tell the story behind the console and the people involved. These are her comments after read...

Crazed Atari fan's lawyers? That's a new one. What legal right would a fan of Atari have to send him C&D letters?

Re: Magnavox VS Activision court case?

Magnavox continued filing suits against video game companies throughout the 80s and 90s as well. Both Activision and Nintendo went to court during the 80s and lost, becoming licensees of said patents.

Hope everyone enjoys my piece on the Studio II, that's the first time anywhere the story of its creation has been told.
