Re: Best version of Battle Chess or even chess game in general?

Archon is a brilliant game, but the only similarity to chess is that it is played on a similar looking board. Still well worth playing, but (imho) avoid Archon II.

Re: Retro Gamer - Issue 202

Had this a few days now and surprised nothing has been posted here yet! Star Wars subs cover is..... ok. Contents: Making of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - MOST EXCELLENT! Terrific game. Ultimate Guide to Twin Cobra - Not my type of game. Will read later. Digital Destinations: Looking at ...

Re: JSW guided tour (issue 201)

Thanks for the kind words though I also feel a right t***. I stupidly thought that first comment was saying I'd done a good job as 'the author'. I felt all warm inside at receiving unsolicited praise. But of course he actually meant Matthew Smith. I am duly chastised. Vanity, vanity, all is vanity....

Re: Retro Gaming Spotlight: Gauntlet

The only way to get much fun out of the game was played with 2 (or better 3 or 4) players. It was essentially a timer-based game, and no matter how good you were , the only way to get far was to pump lots of coins in; this was never a 1 credit game! There wasn't that much variety to the gameplay, an...

Re: Retro Gamer - Issue 201

I agree that Amstrad wouldn't have taken the risk , far more likely have used the technology to expand their CPC side of the business. And yes, 1989 was too late , as by that time the Atari ST was showing what a great machine it was, was (at that time) equal to the Amiga, and was much more affordabl...

Re: Retro Gamer - Issue 201

Bought the mag for the first time in quite some time, primarily for the JSW feature (which was pretty fun) and Loki (which was really interesting). Some really good stuff in there, although still hard work reading some of the features with the choice of colour for background and text. Pole Position ...

Re: Konami shoot 'em ups

It's all down to the challenge, which is what arcades were about back in the day. A fair game is one that is tough, but doable with skill and a good memory; but it takes a lot of time and patience. Nowadays we're used to seeing the end of games , and getting a good bit of play time in, but back in t...

Re: Samurais & Ninjas

Well, there's the bizarrely named Ninja Scooter Simulator (Metrocross clone). As has been mentioned, Usagi Yojimbo is a good 8 bit title to seek out and Lords of the Rising Sun was an interesting Cinemaware title (though some of the mini-games were a bit rubbish). Ninja was a fun Mastertonic budget ...

Re: Did the ability to copy games on the Amiga help Commodore's profits or harm them?

People bought the Amiga until we got to the stage where arcade-style games (eg SFII) were significantly better, but more importantly PCs were A,affordable and B.could match and surpass the Amiga for computer-style (usually mouse-centric) games. The 'miggy had a great run, it served a purpose to make...

West Bank/Bank Panic for home computer/arcade is a fantastically addictive game, although it's all about reactions than aiming.

Re: What Films/TV Have you Watched Recently?

Jumanji - Welcome to the Jungle. After an uncertain start, Dwayne Johnson has cut out a great niche for himself with action movies that never take themselves TOO seriously. This is another brilliantly entertaining movies, and (imho) far superior to the original film.

Re: PC Classic - new games console based on PC

Would be great to have a mini PC with a PROPER, mega-easy to use front end. I mean one where you have a list of about the top 5000 PC games and it automatically configures EVERYTHING. So one 'click' on an icon for, say , Ecstatica, amd if you have the game on your HD it just works. No choosing sound...

Re: Saboteur on Nintendo Switch

Saboteur was a good fame back in the day, and Durrell made some good, solid games for the Speccy. Personally I always preferred the original to the sequel as it was relatively short and completable. Yeah the sequel could be, but not as much fun, plus maybe the novelty of the original had worn off a ...

Re: What Films/TV Have you Watched Recently?

Just been to see Overlord in the cinema, definitely lives up to the epic trailer!!! When I sat watching the trailer for Overlord in the cinema, I fully expected it to be a movie translation of Wolfenstein; I was shocked when it wasn't. Is there any link between the movie and the game, as it was sur...
