In all honesty, I'd forgotten about that and was thinking of Amstrad's Mega PC with the MegaDrive in it.
Meanwhile I was thinking about the Amstrad plus machines with "the GX4000 in it"...

Re: Why was Pinball Dreams series never released for the Atari ST

Starball is new to me. Looks pretty decent, although it runs way smoother when running on the Atari Falcon. I wonder if that is the way it is captured, the processor difference or that the game actually can use the Falcon hardware scrolling. Obsession is impressive, it seems like the Atari Falcon ha...

Why was Pinball Dreams series never released for the Atari ST

Why was Pinball Dreams/Fantasies/Illusions never released for the Atari ST? Growing up, it must have been hard seeing this great game on your Amiga-owning friends machines and not your Atari ST. I know that a good version of it was eventually released for the Atari Falcon. But that machine was serio...

Re: The New gen thread PS5/XBOXsX (feat PONG)

A race between a Wifi router and a air purifier The winner is the one we will want to play games on 20 years from now. I will wait. But will it be anything to pick up 20 years from now? Will the games be available? Online servers all gone? Will emulation of the new old censored be the only thing av...

Re: Stunning new Amstrad CPC racing game

Not many games were specifically made for the NEC PC-8801 MC, which is a shame, but as you say it was backwards compatible with the previous models in the PC-88 series. Additionally, the CD drive that came as standard in most PC-8801 MC's was identical to the CD-ROM² add-on for the PC Engine, and y...

Re: Stunning new Amstrad CPC racing game

It looks fantastic. To be fair, though, there are other 8-bits that can run impressive looking racers too. For example, the NEC PC-8801 MC has a Z80-based CPU and you can play PC Engine games like Outrun on it. :) The specs are very impressive with 48kB to 256 kB video RAM. N mode: PC-8000 series c...

Re: Stunning new Amstrad CPC racing game

The CPC came late to the party and offered no advance. It was and remains in a similar position, an also ran, but the fans insist it was a player. It wasn't. It only has 3rd place because any competition had fallen away before it launched. The 8 bit wars were over, the Spectrum and C64 had won, the...

Re: Stunning new Amstrad CPC racing game

Or from the non-fan viewpoint, it's just another hoary old Z80 machine with a tired AY chip and garish low resolution colour, that you'd mostly end up playing in green screen while loading from tape, at a not inexpensive £250! That colour was an option and disc drive models came later doesn't quite...

Re: Stunning new Amstrad CPC racing game

Given the relative release dates of the two systems, yes, yes they do. We have games released now that are as good as quality Spectrum games, and some where the feature set goes beyond. With the much later release of the CPC, it should be a more capable system than the Oric. This is my main bugbear...

Re: Stunning new Amstrad CPC racing game

Yes, it was just a response to Ivarf's "if only it had a 6502". History could have been different for lots of reasons, but there's no escaping the CPC is an also ran alongside the Oric. They may both be quite capable machines in the right hands, but that was rarely proven at the time. They both hav...

Re: Stunning new Amstrad CPC racing game

I don't think Sinclair ever made a proper French version of the Spectrum. You can plug a British one into a TV set there and get a black and white picture, but colour wouldn't have been possible without expensive hardware mods until the 128K models arrived and I've yet to see one with an AZERTY key...

Re: Stunning new Amstrad CPC racing game

Also, a lot of CPC sales came in countries such as France, where the differing colour TV system meant that the C64 and Spectrum were slow to market and were the ones playing catch up to the CPC and the local Thomson computers. It's no surprise that a lot of the CPC's most highly regarded games - su...

Re: Stunning new Amstrad CPC racing game

No machine can jerk like an Amstrad (well, except maybe the Atari ST) True, except for maybe MSX? On the other hand the ZX Spectrum can't scroll as smooth or fast or as well as the Amstrad CPC. SID rules. The weakest part of the ST and CPC is the soundchip. The Spectrum had beeper sound too s...
