Re: Retro Gamer - Issue 191

I don't see the relevance of this to the Amstrad being cheap crap. We know the C64 and Spectrum are the superior gaming platforms, this is well established fact. Are you still a moderator of this forum? He's obviously wrong and you are obviously correct. The C64 was considered by most people to be ...

Of course it's cheap crap, it's Amstrad.
The return rate of new Amstrad CPCs was much lower than other home computers of the era. Interestingly for Sinclair made Spectrums it is highly recommended to change all electrolytes, on the Amstrad made Spectrums its not a problem.

Re: Retro Gamer - Issue 191

The modulator quality was fine for the time. It could never compare to the colour monitor, but it was 'good enough' for most considering the price. If that wasn't the case, we'd have seen RGB Scart cables as standard on everything that followed instead of the crappy composite cables that continued ...

Re: Retro Gamer - Issue 191

I loved my Amstrad CPC and friends did too. A lot of Amstrad versions were better than the Spectrum equivalents. How many games did you have for your Amstrad? I had about 50 original games and maybe 400 copies. I can't say that I felt missing out having an Amstrad. A good RGB monitor, a fair select...

Re: Retro Gamer - Issue 191

Economy of scale. Who bought a 6128 after the disaster that was the 434? What do you mean? Disaster? 434? Who bought a 6128? The 6128 sold very well, over a million machines. The 464 one would need to provide tape power, so much of a muchness there. I really would put it down to volumes and stock, ...

Juncker: Oui, Oui, c’est tres bon en le Comode, mais je played it on el Amstrad CPC464, et c’est merde!! May: But why play the Amstrad version? We all know Amstrad is sh1t?!? Have you ever had a negative view on a Retrogame then changed your mind and held the opposite view later on after looking at...

Re: What did you prefer: cassettes or 5¼" floppies?

Did anything except cartridges beat the Amstrad CPC 6128 at speed for loading games? Disk loading on the Atari computers is really fast, I think its been quoted as the fastest of all the 8-bits. I think this is due to the design where the disk drive has it's own processor and the high speed SIO con...

Re: What did you prefer: cassettes or 5¼" floppies?

My main memeoris of the cpc464 were the little rituals I felt necessary to make certain games load without crashing and the absolute revelation it was when I got a Master System and instant access carts! Several generation tapes copied from tape to tape? Or a faulty tape drive? What you are describ...

Not had any experience with the 6128 but I'd say the drives in the Tatung Einstein are better as they don't have that horrid rubber band.
I have always believed they used the same 3" Hitachi drive

Slightly off topic and a bit vague maybe, but how long did it take to load a 512k Amiga game off the 3 inch disks?
The Amiga was in practice way slower than the Amstrad CPC 6128 for loading games. Of course this has something to do with bigger games too

Re: What did you prefer: cassettes or 5¼" floppies?

I used cassettes, 3" and 5 1/4" disks with my Amstrad CPC and later the usual the DD and HD 3 1/2" and 5 1/4" diskettes with my 286 PC.
I have an really old PC stuffed away somewhere too that uses 8" floppy disks, 360 and 1.2 MB. Thats a cool collectors size :)
