Re: Video/Computer Game History Books

Just finished "Grand Thieves and Tomb Raiders". Very good book with lots of great stories on the humble beginnings of so many famous developers and games. Does have some laughably terrible or incorrect moments though - the author claims that "Earthworm Jim" was the first game to get licensed produc...

Re: Retro Gamer - Issue 165

I haven't yet picked up my copy (we in America just got it) but I've seen the list of Apple games and am truly baffled by some of the selections. Mystery House over all the other Sierra games? Choosing Ultima 1? Over its four other, vastly superior sequels? I can't imagine you could find more than ...

Re: Retro Gamer - Issue 165

The time has come for me to stop reading the magazine. Not because of the content - it looks like a great issue, but because I physically find it difficult to read, even with my reading glasses on. Its actually frustrating, and a stop start experience. I also read Private Eye, Viz, BBC History and ...

Re: Happy Birthday MAME 20 today.

I love MAME. Have been playing it for a long, long time. It's such a treat to be able to have some of my favorite arcade games at home, like Time Pilot or Mappy. What they've accomplished with MAME is truly remarkable. I think the first emulator I ever used was the one that emulated the various Pac-...

Re: What sticks in your mind over the years.

I've owned a bunch of systems, some (SNES) I loved more than others (Dreamcast). I go back 40 years, to a home Pong system. But when I look back and think about the system I had the deepest connection with, the one I remember most fondly, it would be the Apple IIe. That was our family's first comput...

Re: You vs yer kids!

I don't have kids but have numerous teenage nephews. I've had them over many times for all-night gaming sessions. Some games I can hang with them. Others they smoke me. But sports games? Those are still mine :)

Wasn't there some sort of Xbl/psn remake? Or is the original still the best way to play it?
Yes, there was a PS3 "remake" but it's more of an homage than a remake. There's roughly 50 billion differences between the two.

They also released the original as a PSN title and it plays really well.

Re: First home game u played that was closest 2 arcade quali

My vote goes to Super Mario Bros on the NES. Along with that one, pretty much the whole launch NES lineup. Super Mario Bros, Mario Bros, Donkey Kong, Popeye, and a bunch of others - all looked pretty much exactly like the arcade.

A few suggestions...

Some articles I'd like to see: - an article on video game books (Console Wars, Ultimate History of Video Games, etc.) - an article on video game documentaries (King of Kong and a billion others) - an article on Sierra and their games - an in-depth coverage of the Ultima series of games and various p...
