Questions for Howie 'Atari/Gottlieb/Jaleco' Rubin

Hello all - my next In the Chair interviewee was right in the thick of it in the Golden Age of Arcades (TM), working at Atari, setting up the videogame division at Gottlieb and becoming President of Jaleco, which meant close links with Nintendo. Below is a mini bio (in Howie's own words) and some of...

Re: JSW guided tour (issue 201)

Thanks for the kind words though I also feel a right t***. I stupidly thought that first comment was saying I'd done a good job as 'the author'. I felt all warm inside at receiving unsolicited praise. But of course he actually meant Matthew Smith. I am duly chastised. Vanity, vanity, all is vanity....

Re: JSW guided tour (issue 201)

I really enjoyed it. When I interviewed the creator of Space Taxi, he gave me notes on all the levels. Unfortunately only a couple of those comments ended up in the mag... I love that game. And wish we'd had a guided tour of it! I suppose not as many people know of it's charms as some other 8-bit m...

Re: JSW guided tour (issue 201)

Yeah, I can understand that Nikolai - thanks for at least reading some of it! It helps if you've always wanted to know just why Matthew put some weird creature in some odd location and where the idea came from... and for many of us who grew up with MM/JSW, as Antiriad notes, it really does. Ah, nost...

Re: Questions for Jeff 'Q*Bert' Lee

Mr Jenzie - I didn't see this before the interview... but amazingly i did ask both those questions in the course of my 2 hour chat with Jeff! Great minds and all that. so you'll be in the mag.

Cheers you 3 - i really appreciate you taking the time to post questions. See you next time.

Re: JSW guided tour (issue 201)

Well what a kind thing to say. Cheers mate. And for those wondering, I do not know who smccd is. If it's you Dad, thanks but we've talked about this before... Also, I too like the guided tour/director's commentary format - for 8-bit games which often had specific screens, I think it works well - I'v...

Questions for Jeff 'Q*Bert' Lee

Hello all - my next desert island castaway is best known for being the artist who created Q*Bert, but his artistic talents graced many Gottlieb arcade games in the early 80s and after (see list below). If you have any questions for Jeff, post them here and I'll get your name in the mag. I'm talking ...

Re: Retro Gamer - Issue 200

DRS your interview with Mathew Smith was superb and I can very much related to Mathew. I think a lot of people have rose tinted glasses to bedroom programmers whilst Matt says it’s not really as good as people think. Chasing publishers to get payed. One of the best issues I read In a long time. I t...

Re: Retro Gamer - Issue 200

The comments by Ely on interviewing Matt Smith about a difficult time in his life are fair, though. As you can perhaps detect in the opening of that piece, I am honest at how uncomfortable I felt at times. I have known Matt since 2004 and been up to see him in Liverpool 7 times since then, sometime...

Re: Retro Gamer - Issue 200

Ah it is lovely reading this thread - it is indeed heartening to hear the congratulations for reaching 200 and the positive feedback on this epic issue. Makes me feel very proud being a part of the mag since issue 5. Cheers. Yet, it is the way of the human that of course I am focusing on the negativ...
