Nothing beats playing as Questor the elf and nicking all the treasure.

Re: Retro Gamer - Issue 200

For what it's worth, 8 bits refers to the width of the data bus, not the address bus. Most of the 8 bit machines we know and love could handle considerably larger addresses, typically in the 12-16 bit range. That's just as well really, as you can't get a lot of game in 256 bytes. Anyway, I think its...

Re: Best DS in 2019?

I'd have to think that there are good and bad batches of the Lite, as mine has practically clocked up more air miles than Chuck Yeager but still works fine. I won't dispute that others have managed to snap theirs just by looking at it though; there are plenty of such stories about. If you want to pl...

Re: Best DS in 2019?

That's the scaling issue I referred to earlier. The DS screens are 192 pixels high versus 240 on the 2/3DS so there is no exact upscale. You've either got to live with large borders (less of an issue with the XL models) or a bit of blurring. GBA games on the DS also have a border added but the scree...

Re: From The Forum Issue 201

Between the Switch and the GPD Win, practically everything is a handheld game these days. For a delve back in time though, I'd look to Link's Awakening as a game that really set the standard for what could be achieved. That the recent remake changes so little - obvious graphical makeover aside - sta...

Re: Best DS in 2019?

The 2DS is a weird one. It's only got a single screen that is partially blanked out to make it look like two, hence the slab shape.

While it'll play all the same games, obviously bar games like Xenoblade that need the New 3DS, it's about as pocket-friendly as a Switch with Joycons attached.

Re: Best DS in 2019?

The DS Lite is still my top pick. Smaller than the original DS but wirh a bigger screen, phenomenally good battery life, and the GBA slot if you need it. They're common as muck, so cheap to pick up too. Flash carts give you access to emulators, homebrew, backups, etc. if you want to go down that rou...

Re: In case anyone thought that Atari console was actually going to happen...

Getting semi-serious, do Atari even own the rights to Kasumi Ninja any more? They've had to flog off a lot in recent years and the only one of the above I could find in their recent IP catalogue was Bentley Bear/Crystal Castles. Fully seriously, there will be no games in development for the new VCS....

Re: Why are there so many Amiga fans on this forum?

I'd think the thing is that back in the 80s, during the heyday of pixel art, people would be using every trick in the book to get the look that they were after, and the limitations were those of the hardware itself. Nowadays, there to be a bunch of self-appointed pixel art gurus who define it in ter...

Re: Why are there so many Amiga fans on this forum?

By that definition there is very little "pixel art" on the Amiga, as the vast majority of its games used retouched digitized graphics, gradiant fills, antialiasing and other techniques that he'd disqualify. Indeed, I'd argue that it's the ability to do these things that set Amiga graphics apart from...

Re: Why are there so many Amiga fans on this forum?

Well ok, sure. But pixel art to me is when it's easy to make out each individual pixel without even trying and when changing any single one for a sprite can make a noticeable difference. That's not what pixel art is though. Rather, it's basically just art created as pixels rather than, say, scalabl...

Re: Why are there so many Amiga fans on this forum?

I think you're underrating the resolving power of the human eye somewhat, as it's quite possible to see individual pixels on a 4K monitor from a couple of feet away and neither the Amiga nor the Dreamcast comes even remotely close to that. And yes, there are games with hand drawn 2D graphics that'll...

Re: Nintendo Switch Discussion

We got six different models of 2/3DS in the end so maybe they'll do both a larger and a smaller one at some point. I've a feeling that if there is to be a Pro model, it'd probably have to be a fair bit bigger as they're simply not going to get the processing to offer a significant graphical improvem...

Re: Nintendo Switch Discussion

I'd think there are two markets for the Switch Lite. Homes that already have a Switch are unlikely to need a second one that can be attached to a TV, so a pure handheld would suit them. Also, if you're upgrading from a slab 2DS, it's about as portable as that, at least. I'd like to see an even small...

Re: Just been given a 2DS XL

Yeah, if there has never been one created there's obviously nothing to delete, and the eShop account is tied to the hardware. If it has one though, don't touch it.
