Re: Most unforgiving jumps in games?

The Star Wars games on NES and SNES were full of nightmare jumps too numerous to mention, but I think the worst one for me is in Super Star Wars inside the sandcrawler - it's the run up to the boss from the platform that drops down meaning you have to jump away from the lava to the few smaller jump...

Re: What's your favourite ARCADE game?

R-Type II - it's hardly be groundbreaking stuff, but it gobbled up plenty of my cash by virtue of it being the lone arcade machine in the bar at my local leisure centre for years. I also have fond multi-player memories of X-Men, Sunset Riders and Knights of the Round... games of that ilk. Other than...

Re: What games have dated poorly?

This all seems very cosmetic. The original, top-down GTA obviously looks dated - but it is still loads of fun to play ... that is an example of a game that has aged well, IMHO, whereas some of its "better looking" sequels, I can't see myself returning to time and time again. On the other hand, Donke...

Re: What game system was made for you?

I think I'd have to say the PlayStation. That was probably the last chance I had before real life kicked in and things like jobs and mortgages began to take up all of my precious time. Fond memories of marathon sessions on the PS Final Fantasy games, Gran Turismo, GTA, Medieval... I just can't devot...

Gibberish Driftwood wrote:Super Mario Sunshine - Why do people diss this game, it's not that bad is it?
It was a good follow up to Super Mario 64.
Totally agree - In fact, it's a much better game than Super Mario 64 as far as I'm concerned.

Re: Any love for the isometric style game?

Many an hour spent on Batman and Head Over Heels on the Speccy. MOVIE was great, and in a similar vein - Shadowrun on the SNES. Escape From The Planet of the Robot Monsters? And what about Phantom Club - I think it was universally panned, but I always kinda liked it. More recently, games like the GB...

Re: Do linear platform games have less long term appeal?

This is why I still don't get why they're being referred to as 'linear' - the trend has been for games where you go back and replay levels, whether they be from a map or hub, or just starting again, taking a different route or doing a trickier move to find new things. That's anything but 'linear'. ...

Re: Do linear platform games have less long term appeal?

For me, the bottom line is that if "whatever it is you have to do in the game" is entertaining, then you will return to it. There are good and bad linear games, just as there are good and bad one-screen, high-score quests. Personally, I like the idea of there being a sense of exploration to games. M...

Re: Worst fall from Grace

Or square who went down the crapper the moment they merged with enix in 2003 Even looking at the main Final Fantasy franchise alone... (And ignoring the online entries into the canon, which I have never played) to go from FFXII to FFXIII just baffles me. I understand it's good to introduce change, ...

Re:

I find the whole FPS genre incredibly boring - Doom, Quake, Half Life you can keep them all. Bought Call of Duty for the Wii, took it back and traded it in next day (God knows why I bought it in the first place) Just don't find them interesting at all - sorry! I can't see the appeal either. I don't...

Re: Castle of Illusion: First Impressions

I definitely played and enjoyed this back in the day. I am yet another person who got to play this after borrowing a friend's MegaDrive/games. I've never owned my own MD back then - I was still quite happy with my Speccy, and eventually upgraded to a SNES. Sadly, I don't remember too much about the ...

Wasn't there going to be a SNES version that was cancelled?
I seem to recall seeing a screenshot in a mag at the time... I presume it wasn't going to be just a port of the Amiga game was it?

I think I'm gonna go with Transformers on the Speccy - simply because it should have been a dream license: Giant robots that turn into vehicles, war machines and, erm, cassette recorders, wreaking carnage on planet Earth? A massive, already established, fanbase gripped in a merchandise frenzy? How c...
