Re: Free stuff in cereals and crisps...

I'm going to break cover on one of my sadly all too rare forays back into the world of Retro Gamer and have a rant... Crackerjacks. The name might mean absolutely nothing to many especially in the UK but when I was much, much younger we spent a few years living in the US and these caramel coated lum...

Re: Sony announces Playstation 1 Classic

I loved the Mini NES, the SNES and Commodore 64 but for some reason cannot work up the enthusiasm for this one. It might be that I have ~900 PS1 games and still have an original Playstation and PSOne set up along with a PS2 and PS3 that can all run the games so it becomes a bit pointless owning a mi...

Re: Retro Arcades in Budget Holiday Camps/Parks

About six years ago we went to the Beverly caravan park in Paignton. The arcade there was like stepping back in time to various eras with stuff like Super Hang On, Defender, Virtua Cop, Xevious and even a collection of electromechanicals from the Edwardian era to the 1960s. For someone into that sor...

Speedball 9. Falcon 10. Resolution 101 This is a personal selection based on what I enjoyed at the time. The ...

Re: What are you currently playing?

Started playing Resistance 2 yesterday. Despite having it and Resistance 3 in my collection and loving Resistance for some reason I never got round to playing them until now. Going to make up for lost time. :)

Re: Games and Humour

One of the moments that made me laugh out loud was spotting the smiley face on rockets in the original Unreal Tournament. Unexpected but a brilliantly funny touch. The other is from Discworld with Death telling the fly "Oh b*gger off!", something which has become an in-joke between Mrs Von (a huge D...

Re: That Millenium Falcon Ad

Whenever I see one of those 'Build it yourself' partworks I am reminded of an incident in my local newsagents. An elderly gent picked up a copy of the build a model Bismarck in 120 issues one, looked at it and uttered the immortal words..."**** me, you could rebuild the original for less than that!".

Re: Top 5 ZX 81 games

Ah! Some ZX81 love, excellent. The first 'real' computer I owned having convinced my parents it would be useful for school work on the back of showing them a copy of Sinclair Programs magazine. I then proceeded to spend my pocket money on an assortment of games. Anyhow, my personal top 5: 1. 3D Defe...

Re: Top 10 C16, Plus/4 games.

I got a lot of fun out of my Plus4 and have always considered it an under-rated machine. My personal picks in no particular order would have to be: Jetbrix Tutti Frutti Voidrunner Trailblazer Ace (+4) Ace 2 (+4) Icicle Works Autozone Baby Berks Reach for the sky Honorable mentions to: Mercenary (+4)...

Re: Crunchy Ham

I don't know about sliced ham but I have certainly experienced crunchy tinned ham. Mrs Von bought a tin of el cheapo reconstituted minced pig from Poundland or some such budget establishment. I swear they had taken the idea of the 'whole hog' to the extreme and included bones, teeth, trotters as wel...

Re: Epic crashes

Mine was a double crash. An actual crash in the PC version of Carmageddon sent my car spinning over a drop only for it to plummet through the ground on landing and into a formless grey ether. It was actually quite relaxing watching the car slowly tumble through the nothingness raising all kinds of q...

Re: The hardest games of all time

Others have already mentioned Airwolf on the Spectrum and Pinpoint on the C16/+4, both games where the tape almost ended up being flung the length of the garden from my bedroom window. Nobody thus far has mentioned Fahrenheit 3000 also on the Spectrum. If the pixel perfect jumping wasn't bad enough,...

Re: Food/Drink from the past

Don't know if it's the same in the rest of the country, but at the moment you can't move around here for shops selling nothing but American sweets (well, "candy"). There's at LEAST four within a ten minute walk of my place, plus maybe seven more in town and a couple up in Southport as well. It's th...
