Re: Retrogaming Spotlight: Donkey Kong

I've fantastic memories of this game and exhausting so many quarters.
I never realized that Jumpman was also Mario!

Re: Retrogaming Spotlight: Frogger

Definitely one of the older games that everyone loves to hate (or hates to love?). Frogger takes me back.
The two player variant was definitely...contentious.

I'm gonna go ahead and get this in first, because every single one of you is going to be humming this.

Re: Retro Gaming Spotlight - Space Invaders

Never heard of it, is it any good? Yes? It's anxiety-inducing. This game is really where the art on the cabinet had a major impact. If you contrast this with others, the arcade cabinet style is a little less than motivating. The logo is great, the colors are good - but the depictions of the invader...

Re: Retro Gaming Spotlight - Space Invaders

Goodness, how many times has that last one been the bane of my existence? There you are, making excellent progress in staving off the invasion of earth by an alien menace, and you're down to only a handful of the galactic fiends... only to have the very last one accelerate to terrifying speed as it ...

Re: Retrogaming Spotlight: Centipede

My first encounter with Centipede was when I was 9 years old, and it was on free play at a local pizza shop. I remember getting so incredibly frustrated with the game, but continuing to play it. The fleas, they keep coming with that nerve-wracking "Beeeeeeeww" sound effect. This had to be my very fi...

Re: Your New Retro Gamer Community Team

Hah! If you're referring to the fact that community management is often a servant to two masters, you're right. However, good companies trust their community people when it comes to communities, and empower their judgment. In this, I'm exceptionally fortunate to work for Future, and the site is fort...

Re: Your New Retro Gamer Community Team

However, if there was some drive to abandon forums as a matter of policy, I can't imagine Joe and his team would have been allowed to start big jobs like the major upgrades they're involved in elsewhere. During a recent presentation to shareholders, the one big thing that the C-suite of the company...

Re: Your New Retro Gamer Community Team

Rest assured, you've not been forgotten. As Nick mentioned, there were several pressing migrations (one still pending), and my team is down a head for a tidbit. As for where we are on things: • Mods are selected, next step is impaneling them. • New theme is still tentative. Response from initial sel...

Gazillionaire, Stars! and Other Retro Spreadsheet Simulators

I was browsing through the listing of available 4x strategy and business simulation games the other day, and I realized the great golden era of these was most definitely and firmly ensconced in the retro era. Gazillionaire was a magnificent game that was not only fun, but taught resource scarcity an...

Re: Anno 1602 giveaway

I have to say, I've thoroughly enjoyed all the games in the Anno series. Except Anno Online. And the most recent debacle, Anno 2205. But truly, Anno 1701 and 1404 was a masterpiece of a game, and Anno 2070 was perfect. There's elements to them that hearken back to the islands fights of Warcraft 2, a...

Re: Your New Retro Gamer Community Team

Can you honestly say that’s how you actually speak to people face to face? Unfortunately, I do. With perhaps a bit more conviviality that accompanies facial expression and body language not typically accompanying an 80x80 pixel avatar. I've been told that it sometimes sounds like I've swallowed a t...

Re: Your New Retro Gamer Community Team

here could be some tidy up of stickied threads... Enacted. I DONT LIKE CHANGE!! Well, it won't be that jarring of a change. When are the Avatars moving to the left? The right just feels wrong! Fun Fact: I have no idea where this setting is. It might actually simply be part of the theme itself, in w...

Re: Your New Retro Gamer Community Team

Maybe I'm being dumb here but what on Earth does that mean? I was being somewhat intentionally coy. It's a thought I had in the shower, actually. You see, there is no "new" retro gamer news per se, to prompt conversation over the course of time. There may be periodic deep dives into how a game was ...
