Re: What's the most iconic retro game that's actually rubbish?

Some games can be rubbish but are still cool. Lots of people say R-Type 2 is a poor sequel, being nowhere near as balanced as the first game. It's still really cool though - and is fun to play if you're happy to remain calm and not get too upset at the cheap deaths. Most SNK shooters have a similar ...

Re: What's the most iconic retro game that's actually rubbish?

You arguably wouldn't have any of the Super Mario games without the original arcade Mario Bros. (and that's a loathsome turd of a game).

Re: What's the most iconic retro game that's actually rubbish?

There is no way Pac Man or Tetris are rubbish but I can see why they may not appeal to everyone. It may be because I'm awful at both games, but I just find them to induce a kind of panic when they speed up that I just don't find fun. Tetris is without question the most overrated game I can think of...

Re: What's the most iconic retro game that's actually rubbish?

There is no way Pac Man or Tetris are rubbish but I can see why they may not appeal to everyone. I was actually going to say Earthworm Jim but I can see it's already been mentioned. It's the most iconic example of a group of late 16-bit platformers which seemed to put graphical beauty ahead of game...

Re: Castlevania

I recently did a playthrough of some of the 8 and 16bit Castlevanias. Castlevania 1 is excellent. Really good simple fun and a good difficulty curve. Definitely recommended. Castlevania 2 - Simon's Quest is excellent as long as you use a walkthrough to get you through the incomprehensible puzzles. T...

Re: XBox Series X

The design looks okay but it will be really inconvenient to find a place for. It's not going to fit on a shelf in a TV cabinet. Why not? It isn't a huge box, it's only the size of 2 or 3 joypads. Smaller footprint than something like a PS3 or 360, it isn't something on the scale of a PC tower thoug...

Re: Konami shoot 'em ups

Also worth noting - the controller makes a huge difference to games like this. I can't play shmupps with a PS4 controller - I've tried a few and I can't get on with the d-pad or (shudder) the analogue stick. Ideally I like a nice loose d-pad like you get on a Megadrive or Saturn. Failing that, an ar...

Re: Konami shoot 'em ups

Gradius is a classic for a reason. It's hard, and the checkpoint system is a pain in the arse - as is the reliance on keeping hold of power-ups. It's still a fun game though - certainly not trash! I actually prefer Salamander/Life Force though - i reckon that's the best game on the collection. Yeah,...

Re: Samurais & Ninjas

There must be hundreds of Ninja/Samurai games out there but some of the obvious ones are Shinobi (personal favourites are Revenge of Shinobi and Shinobi III on Megadrive, but you can't really go wrong with Shinobi in general), Last Ninja on various home computers and the Tenchu games on PS1/PS2. I r...

Re: Ebay is flooded with repros. Can anything be done?

Well officially speaking it wouldn't be a place to break copyright because legally licensed re-issues do exist. Unofficially it would be an obvious place to put items if you don't want customers to return products or report you citing that 'I thought this was an orginal printing'. This would hopeful...

Re: Ebay is flooded with repros. Can anything be done?

This may be a really bad idea but... How about if Ebay actually had a reissue/reprodutcion category? Not necessarily to condone unlicensed copying (there are some legal re-issues after all) but the idea being that creating an intentional grey area may have the benefit of creating a white area. I wis...

Re: The most disappointed you've ever been in a release

I was most disappointed in Rebel Strike. Rogue Squadron was really good on the N64 and then Rogue Leader on the Cube surpassed it in every way and was, at the time, mindblowing. Rebel Strike isn't a terrible game but so much of it just doesn't really work. The on-foot sections added nothing and were...

Re: Mega SG

As someone who has more CRTs than is sane I'd say don't rule out a 14" portable. We've become conditioned to thinking bigger is better regarding screens but a Megadrive is eminently playable on a decent 14" tube (it's how most of us played them back in the 90s in our bedrooms after all) and you can ...
