Re: When was the NES released in the UK and the rest of Europe?

In my area (Great Yarmouth) the NES was well and truly on the radar before the Turtles pack came out. It had been on sale, with a very substantial display and demo unit (with just about every black-box game available to play, along with others such as RC Pro Am, Castlevania, Mike Tyson's Punch Out)...

Did you ever have to call a gaming helpline - and if so why?

In the days before the internet many games used to have a helpline number printed in the back of the manual. Did you ever call one? If so why? - I think the first time I ever used one was for Super Metroid. I think I had to use the X Ray beam on a bit of wall somewhere but I'd got totally stuck and ...

Re: Recommended games for 3 or more simultaneous local players

It depends on how far back you want to go. Gamecube era there are loads of 4 player racing games and also the likes of Super Monkey Ball and Zelda: Four Swords. N64 had obvious ones like Turok and Goldeneye. More generally, racing games tend to be a good bet (things like Super Off Road tend to suppo...

Re: Shooting Gallery Games Recommendations

I really liked the shooting gallery bits in the Robocop game. I thought it looked really cool how the lines moving along the X and Y axis formed the crosshair.

Re: Shooting Gallery Games Recommendations

Depends how strict you want to be with the Shooting Gallery theme.
I'd suggest Safari Hunt (basically an animated shooting gallery) and Marksman Shooting (more a shooting range than a gallery) both on Sega Master System.

Re: Minor or lesser known Arcade Coin-Ops you really liked

A few 90s ones (from my student union days): GTI Club - A brilliant arcade racer with nimble handling, hidden shortcuts and handbrake turns. We used to get quite competitive at this - loved it. Radikal Bikers - Basically a Crazy Taxi rip off but possibly a bit easier and very fun. Title Fight - Sega...

Re: PlayStation 3 - Retro or not?

I think if current games are still being published for a console in physical form it can't be retro. So the Wii isn't yet retro and neither is the PS3. Once the Fifas and Just Dances stop the consoles can begin their gradual slide towards retro.

Best Ninja Series

We all know ninjas are ace - but which ninjas are ace-est? Ninjas chop stuff, slice stuff, hide in the shadows, chuck stars and - most importantly - never talk about brexit. But which games translate the Ninja experience better than any other? I’ve included all Ninja series I can think of but surely...

Re: Super Castlevania - It's not for me

I've always found SC IV to be disappointingly slow and boring. It's not that I mind the linear gameplay - I don't demand 'Metroidvania' style exploring and exploration - the game just doesn't get the adrenaline pumping. My favourite Castlevania is probably New Generation/Bloodlines. A controversial ...

Re: New Consoles

Games take so much time to develop, it feels like the current gen has only really just hit its stride.
If new consoles are launched in 2020 I very much doubt I'll be buying anything day one. It'll more likely be 2022 before a decent software library is available (and it'll probably be download only).

Re: Where did you get yours?

I actually really liked that EB shop. In general I much preferred them to Game but they didn't do much in the way of trade ins at the time. I was a skint student so had to go for the cheapest deals. I bought the odd game though and would often pop in.

Re: Where did you get yours?

Definitely the old cinema.
I don't think it was EB as that was further up in the Arndale at the same time (opposite Debenhams I think). I almost bought a Neo Geo Pocket Color in there but couldn't really afford it.
