Re: What are you currently playing?

Ridge Racer 3D (3DS)

I love Ridge Racer. It doesn't matter how many times they rehash it, I'm all over it every time.

I hope the rumour of RR8 for the Switch is true!!

Sega fans - what has filled the space they occupied for you?

Since Sega bowed out of the game, I haven't found a lot that I like. The risks they took, the pick up and play and the creativity, without going brown and gritty poo like the others. They offered a big chunk of the experiences I like. Any Sega fans found alternatives that approximate what they used ...

Re: PS2 Component Cable

As a rule of thumb, if you're playing a 240p or 480i title, RGB SCART on a CRT is the best option. That'll give you the sharpest, most vibrantly colourful image. No ghosting, no colour bleed, no dot crawl. Pure colour values. It's the best signal available for those resolutions, and SD CRT TVs displ...

Okage: Shadow King (PS2)

It's okay, but nothing special. The humour feels a little forced and inauthentic, unlike Earthbound (which is the game it most closely seems to try to emulate in this regard). I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would.

Re: What are you currently playing?

Okage: Shadow King (PS2). Not as good as I had hoped. The soundtrack is a shocker and the Earthbound vibe feels forced. Dialogue over-worded. Strange game. It all comes together not quite right.

Re: What are you currently playing?

Time Crisis on PS1. Anyone who hasn't seriously considered a dedicated CRT for RGB scart play, I can't recommend it highly enough. So glad I went this option over an upscaler. Bought a widescreen JVC for peanuts, which has great service menu options for adjusting geometry. So many good televisions a...

Re: What are you currently playing?

^ How have you found the tone of it all? I couldn't help but be affected by how bloody depressing it all was and it impacted my enjoyment in the end. Good game besides, and yeah, frustrating as all hell in parts, although I'm struggling to remember specifics now besides the aforementioned hallucinat...

Re: Scariest gaming moments of all time

First encounter with a crimson head zombie in REmake. Shattering the most reliable convention of the series in one sudden, bewildering, terrifying, panic-sodden moment.

Re: Resident Evil HD Remaster

I can't help but think to myself, "I already played this. 12 years ago." A complete remake, as the Gamecube title itself was, is something I would definitely buy. But with every re-release, compilation and "HD collection" that comes along, it feels less like something to anticipate and more like a p...

Re: Is the PSP retro?

It fell from relevance quick, in the western markets. It "feels" close to retro for me. Certainly doesn't feel current.

EDIT: can confirm 2018 me considers it retro.

Re: Games companies that managed to recover from failed cons

The industry is so young, there haven't been a ton of examples as yet. But exposed form suggests if you're well-run your "failures" won't fail as such. The Gamecube amassed a sustainable installed base as did the N64 before it. That said, the Wii didn't recapture the market Nintendo lost to Sony. It...

Re: What are you currently playing?

Got myself an Xbox One and absolutely stoked with the purchase. I haven't played a title in the Forza series before, so Forza 5 is my introduction and it is blowing me away. Looks stupidly pretty too.

Also ripping through Lego The Hobbit with the wife, and have Watch Dogs on the to-play list.

Re: E3 2014 wants/predictions

These re-releases aren't doing it for me. I get that a lot of people didn't play, for instance, the wind waker when it first came out, so it's awesome in that way. The original Halo games in HD, great, fanservice, etc.. But once the new game gloss wears off, the meat and potatoes is the same gamepla...

It's an incredible machine. The PSX library together with its native library makes it an absolute beast. Love the thing.

Re: What are you currently playing?

Eternal Ring (PS2) - I've started on a sort of "reliving' of the PS2 era, working my way through games in release order (not all of them obviously  ). This is the game I'm starting with. Heard it's similar to the King's Field games but I've not played them. Controls are clunky, the combat isn't...
