Re: Oh how times have changed...

The wife & I were discussing something else thats disappeared, that we remember from early childhood - the rag and bone man. Surely a last vestige of the Victorian age. He used to come down our street, even in the 80's, shouting "rag and bone", or "any old iron", in an incomprehensible kind of way. ...

Theme Tunes with Vocals

One thing that strikes me is how lots of good TV programmes had songs as their theme tunes. It seems to be something we dont see (or hear) these days. A few of the greats that spring to mind include Cheers, Only Fools and Horses, Minder, auf wiedersehen Pet (had to use my German spell-checker there ...

Arcade cabinets

Any chance of running a series of features about the classic arcade cabinets ? After all, they were the big wooden boxes into which gaming was born. Pong, robotron, tempest, paperboy, gauntlet... Each of these "arcade machines" were innovative and distinctive, back when arcades were popular. The gam...

Re: Where did you shop?

Woollies was where it was at. Arndale centre, Wandsworth. Went there with my mum to purchase our Atari 2600. Used to spend my pocket money on those cheap naff cassettes in the bargain basket. Any Change went on pick'n'mix. (Opposite was a super drug that sold codemasters games). I can still remember...

Re: Thriller turns 30 today!

I am the same - my taste has always been 'black' music - hip hop, funk, r&b. That's due to jackson. He did for me what he did for a lot of people - he crossed that bridge between 'white' rock & 'black' pop. Nowadays loads of pop does that. But he did it first. (Ok, maybe you could argue the beegees ...

Re: Thriller turns 30 today!

This and Bad were the only two albums of his worth owning in my opinion, the rest of his stuff was utter tripe Off the wall had some very good tracks, in its time. Thriller was the first album I ever owned. I just had to have it, after the sheer open-jawed amazement of seeing the Motown 25 performan...

Re: Renting videotapes

Found an old advert this morning from a 1982 magazine offering you the chance to buy and own video tapes in VHS or Betamax, you could own the Pink Panther only £29.99! Yes I had forgotten about that. I remember the wow factor of seeing a VHS copy of robocop in a central London store - it was either...

Re: Was the web an easier place to be in Y2K

I first connected to the web in '96. It was all going so well until social networking arrived. I would love the world to turn back to the days just before myspace/facebook. It was a much nicer place back then.

Oh, you gonna blow? Well, I'm a mushroom-cloud-layin' motherf****r, motherf*****r! Every time my fingers touch brain, I'm Superfly T.N.T., I'm the Guns of the Navarone! I think the 2 best films for being jam-packed with great quotes have to be Jaws and Pulp Fiction. The Monty Python movies are in a ...

Re: Whats your FAVOURITE arcade game?

for me, it's got to be Robotron - tense, fun, duel-joystick mahem.

Or, if going slightly less old school, OutRun 2 - all red and shiny.

(I recently posted my top ten favourite arcade machines here: http://toptenretro.wordpress.com/ )

Maybe a secret room that you can only get access to if you can play and survive 5 levels on Donkey Kong. I like your thinking, cardinaluk. If I win the lottery before you, I'll be in touch ! Meanwhile, has anyone seen any old school games in any particular arcades around the UK ? There might be one...
