Re: Arcade and retro Podcast

Bit late posting this but Gavin did a piece for Halloween on a weird arcade machine he found called polybius. I've not seen him since.

1. SNES pretty much the pinnacle of 2D gaming for me. All though the catalogue isn't that varied it's full of absolute gold. 2. NES. Very close to the SNES. Lots of terrible stuff but some real gems on there as well, especially releases from 1987 onwards. A good mix of big titles and japanese weirdn...

Re: Underrated video game villains

Suikoden 2's Luca Blight makes Sephiroth look like a pansy. He doesn't need super human strength or mother issues, he's just a nut job hell bent on a genocidal rampage through a country and is all the more scary because history is full of similar characters.

Final Fantasy VII got me into JRPGs. The sega magazines I read when I had a megadrive were very dismissive of RPGs and pretty much said they were for nerds. Played FFVII and instantly fell in love with the genre. Going back it's a horribly flawed game and not so great but I'll be forever thankfully ...

Re: The system/console you feel most sentimental about

There's two for me. I had a Megadrive but always preferred the SNES. The Megadrive wasn't bad at al but the SNES is so much better. Since I could only play it infrequently at friends houses it kind of attained a mythical status for me. Even worse my parents would try their hardest to stop me from pl...

Re: Supposedly "great" games you tried and hated

Knights of the Old Republic. It was my own fault I hated it. I didn't understand western RPGs and went in expecting Final Fantasy. I've since learned the error of my ways and realised western RPGs have awful battle systems but are all about actually role playing a character. Unreal is another game I...

Re: Amstrad Speccy C64 - hit squad range

Had quite a few of the arcade conversions on C64. Seeing them there brings back a lot of nostalgia especially since most of the them were excellent.

Hands down the SNES but it's a standout in a sea of excellent to very good consoles.

Re: Robocop vs Terminator, and other forgotten classics

I don't rate RvT myself. It's a bit too messy Euro shooter for me with little structure. The gore was a gimmick and it kind of takes a bigger nose dive in the later levels that feel rushed and badly designed requiring the player creep through them to stand a chance. It's fun and not a bad game but I...

Re: Looking back at the Original Xbox

It didn't help that a lot of the best XBox games were also on PC so not really exclusive and while I enjoyed Halo I wasn't blown away by it (and felt the campaign in Halo 2 was naff after a very strong start) Of course they were exclusive, just because some were ported to PC a year or more after it...

Re: Machines you dislike, that you actually own.

I own a CDi 400. When I buy a machine usually you find some hidden gems that make it worth it and the console surprises you. The CDi did not. Firstly the 400 model is a piece of censored. The internal battery is gone so I can't save games and the solution is to remove the resin on the battery chip, ...

Re: Biggest System Flaws

I always felt the Playstation 2 was a big step backwards in terms of console design. Only 2 controller ports where 4 was standard.. No PAL60 support either even after the Dreamcast had made it the norm and NTSC support was only allowed after the uproar due to awful PAL ports of the likes of Devil Ma...

Re: Looking back at the Original Xbox

Never really liked the original XBox. I had a PS2 and the Gamecube was a great compliment to that but the XBox kind of just gathered dust. It didn't help that a lot of the best XBox games were also on PC so not really exclusive and while I enjoyed Halo I wasn't blown away by it (and felt the campaig...

Re: So are the 360 and PS3 now Retro

Even if they aren't retro now they will be at some point. It's the perfect time now to pick up any games that might become rare in the future. Stuff like Nier is climbing in price and the Wii has some really excellent but under appreciated games that are worth hunting down, I remember a few years ag...
